His voice seemed to carry an innate authority that made it impossible to defy.
Riley got into the car and offered a polite greeting. "Sebastian."
Sebastian gave a slight nod.
The car started and quickly merged into the traffic.
Riley sat with her hands resting in her lap, her back straight, looking as well-behaved as a grade-schooler.
The interior of the car was dead silent.
She felt like she should say something to break the awkward tension.
But since she and Sebastian were practically strangers, she had no idea what to talk about. Just as she was racking her brain for a topic, the man's deep, cold voice broke the silence.
"Pierce is out of town?"
Riley nodded. "Yes."
Silence fell over the car again. Was her answer too dismissive?
Sebastian suddenly asking about Pierce clearly showed he cared about his brother. After a beat, Riley added, "There was an emergency at the Havenbury branch that he needed to handle. He'll probably be back in a week."
"A week?"
A hint of displeasure laced the man's tone.
Riley glanced at him. His expression remained unreadable, making it impossible to gauge his mood. "Yes, he said it would take about a week."
The man didn't reply, and the car plunged back into silence.
Since they had spoken, it didn't feel as awkward anymore. Riley turned to look out the window, zoning out as the buildings blurred past.
Suddenly, the car slammed on its brakes.
Caught off guard, Riley lurched forward. In the next second, a hand blocked her forehead, steadying her leaning body, while another large hand protectively covered her pregnant belly.
"Mr. St. John, my apologies. A cat dashed out into the road," came Assistant Fang's voice from the front.
