The Coldest Man in the Room Melted Only for Me novel Chapter 148

Riley had never been so mortified in her entire life. Her face was scorching, and her panic was only making things infinitely worse.

She practically threw herself out of the door, wishing the pavement would open up and swallow her whole. Refusing to meet his eyes, she stammered, "I'm so sorry, Sebastian, I didn't mean to."

A low, rumbling "Hmm" was all he offered. Two seconds later, he added, "Don't just stand there. Get in."

Riley scurried around the hood and slid into the opposite side of the backseat.

Mr. Carter put the car in drive, and they merged into the late-night traffic, heading toward Golden Sands Cove.

Settling in, Riley's heart continued to race, hammering violently against her ribs. Humiliating. Utterly humiliating.

She had nearly concussed herself twice.

Her scalp was throbbing, but she was too self-conscious to even rub it.

Just as she tried to compose herself, a heavy weight suddenly dropped onto her shoulder.

Pierce had collapsed against her side, his head resting heavily near her neck.

The sickening stench of alcohol instantly assaulted her nose.

Scowling in disgust, Riley tried to shove him off, but he was dead weight. "Pierce, sit up straight."

He nuzzled lazily against her shoulder and mumbled, "Riley... let's not get a divorce. Okay?"

Her hands froze mid-shove. In absolute terror, she whipped her head toward Sebastian, locking eyes with him.

A jolt of panic seized her chest. She violently looked away, her fingers curling into tight fists as she braced herself for his interrogation.

Instead, Sebastian reached over, gripped Pierce by the bicep, and effortlessly hoisted him away from Riley. He wedged a decorative throw pillow between the squabbling couple, and tucked another one between himself and Pierce.

Sandwiched between the plush cushions, Pierce was finally propped upright.

Too terrified to face Sebastian's questioning gaze, Riley kept her eyes glued to her lap. "Thank you," she whispered.

For a long moment, the man said absolutely nothing.

She nervously peeked at him through her periphery. He was staring out the window, his lips pressed in a thin line, cutting a stark, unreadable silhouette. His jaw flexed slightly, as if he was mulling over something incredibly serious.
