Chapter 85

ARIA

Matthew nearly knocked over his chair. “What?”

“A month from now. Car accident. My car goes off a bridge, crashes into the ocean. Body never recovered. The words tumbled out fast. ‘I

need you to help me disappear.”

“Aria, that’s insane. Your father-

“That’s why I need a month. To prepare everything.” My hands shook. “And I need you to watch over him after I’m gone. Make sure he gets

the best care.”

Matthew stared at me for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. “As the director here, I can ensure your father’s care continues. I’ll help

you.

Relief flooded through me. Finally, an escape plan.

The door burst open. Blake stormed in, Emma nowhere in sight.

“Visiting hours are over, Redwood.”

Matthew straightened, every inch the powerful hospital director. “I run this facility, Morgan. I decide who visits and when.”

‘Get out.”

They stared at each other, testosterone poisoning the air. God, men were exhausting.

Matthew finally left, but not before giving me a meaningful look. The plan was in motion.

Blake pulled a chair next to my bed. “We need to talk about your little demand.”

“Which one? I’ve made several.”

“The divorce.” He leaned back, studying me. ‘You said if Emma came back safely, I’d owe you. Fine. But we’re not divorcing.”

I laughed. Actually laughed. “That’s not your choice anymore.”

“Isn’t it?” His voice was dangerously soft. “How exactly will you pay your father’s medical bills without me?”

“I’ll figure it out.”

“Really? Planning to sell yourself to Matthew this time? Since it worked so well with me?”

The words hit like a physical blow. I shot up, ignoring the screaming pain in my leg. “How dare you-

“What? State facts?” Blake’s eyes were ice. “Three years ago, you drugged me and-

I DIDN’T DRUG YOU!’ The machines around me started beeping frantically. “For three years, you’ve thrown that in my face! You’ve never

believed me!

“The evidence-

“The evidence was circumstantial and you know it!” Tears burned my eyes. “But you needed someone to blame, and the housekeeper’s

daughter was convenient.”

Blake went quiet. For a second, I thought I saw something crack in his expression.

“Even if I did sell myself to Matthew,” I said, my voice deadly calm, “that’s none of your business anymore. You’re the one who destroyed my life, Blake. You took everything from me. My dignity, my body, my future. So yes, I’ll do whatever it takes to get away from you.”

His face paled. He actually looked… hurt? No. Blake Morgan didn’t do hurt.

“I’m sorry,” he said suddenly. “I take back what I just said.”

Hell must have frozen over. Blake Morgan apologizing?

‘I don’t care about your apology.” I lay back, exhausted. “Just give me the divorce.”

“No.” He stood abruptly. “I’m staying here tonight. Tomorrow, we’re going back to Hampton estate.”

“Blake-

“You need proper care. Private doctors, familiar environment.” He moved toward the door. “And I don’t want you in Redwood’s medical center with him having full control.”

He left before I could argue.

Great. Just great. My fake death couldn’t come fast enough.

Two weeks had passed since I’d returned from the hospital. Two weeks of being trapped in Morgan estate, confined to a wheelchair, watched over by Blake’s staff like I was some kind of flight risk.

Which, to be fair, I was.

The days blurred together. Physical therapy sessions that left me exhausted. Blake’s cold presence at breakfast and dinner, maintaining the

1 spent most of my time in my room, planning my escape. Matthew and I had been texting carefully, working out the details. One month.

That was all I needed.

On a particularly gray afternoon, I decided to go through more of Dad’s belongings. The boxes had been shipped from the carriage house after his accident, and I’d barely had the energy to look through them before.

That’s when I found it.

A small silver-blue object tumbled from a box onto the carpet. I picked it up carefully. A silver pendant with a tiny sapphire.
