Chapter 84

“You piece of shit!” She slammed the bowl down. Apples rolled everywhere. ‘I heard what you just said through the door!”

Blake straightened. “This is between-

“Between you and the woman whose life you destroyed?” Olivia got right in his face. “Blake! I’ve never seen anyone as shameless as you!”

“The situation was complicated-

“Bullshit!” Olivia jabbed a finger at his chest. “You say you care about her, but your actions say you don’t give a damn! You’re just making

excuses for being selfish!”

I couldn’t hold back anymore. The sobs came hard and violent, my chest burning with each one. I curled into myself as much as my

injuries allowed, trying to disappear.

This was pathetic. Crying in front of him. Showing him how thoroughly he’d broken me.

Blake stood frozen, something shifting in his face. Confusion maybe. Pain. I didn’t care anymore.

The door opened again. Emma walked in wearing a hospital gown, looking delicate with her scratches and minor bruises. Nothing like my

mangled leg.

Her eyes widened. “Aria! You’re awake!” She moved closer. “How are you feeling?”

I stared at her. The woman who’d orchestrated my death.

“I’m so sorry about everything. Emma’s voice dripped false sympathy. “That terrible man Jacob kidnapped us both. Thank God he died

when the building collapsed.”

Jacob was dead. The man who’d refused to kill me and my unborn child.

“We should put this nightmare behind us. Emma reached for my hand. “I feel terrible that Blake had to make that awful choice-

Olivia slapped her hand away. “Don’t touch her! Can’t you see her wounds? Haven’t you done enough?”

Emma’s face crumpled in her practiced victim act. “I’m just worried-

“Enough.” The word came out flat. Dead. Everyone turned to stare at me.

I looked at Emma. “You win. Congratulations. I’ll remember every second of pain from that warehouse. I’ll hate Blake forever, just like you

wanted.”

But get out, I continued. ‘You got what you came for. Leave me alone.”

“I will never forgive Blake.” I turned to him, making sure he saw the truth. “Never. For the rest of my life. Now both of you-get out.

Blake’s face went ashen. He stood there for a long moment, then straightened his shoulders. ‘Come on, Emma. She needs rest.

They left together. Of course they did.

Matthew walked in minutes later as the nurse prepared to change my bandages.

“I’ll handle this.” He took the supplies from her. “The patient requires… specialized care.”

The nurse left without argument. Nobody questioned the medical center director.

“Specialized care?” I glared at him through my tears. “Really?”

“Would you prefer I said ‘violent patient with history of assaulting medical staff’?” He carefully began unwrapping my bandages. ‘Because

that’s also accurate.”

“That was one time when we were seven-

“You gave me a bloody nose for trying to help you.” But his touch remained gentle despite the teasing. “Always were my most difficult

patient.

I watched him work for a moment. His hands were steady, professional. But I’d known Matthew long enough to see past the doctor facade.

He was the only person who knew about the pregnancy. The only one who’d kept my secret through that nightmare surgery. The only one

I could trust now.

My fingers gripped the bedsheet. The plan had been forming since I’d woken up-hazy at first, then crystallizing with each painful breath. Each reminder of what Blake had done. What Emma had orchestrated. What my life had become.

Matthew must have sensed the shift in my silence. His hands paused on the bandage, and he looked up. Our eyes met.

Something in my expression made him set down the gauze. He pulled up the chair beside my bed and sat, his face serious now. Waiting.

“I want to fake my death.”

This was it. The plan that had been forming since I’d woken up in this hospital bed, broken and betrayed and so tired of hurting.
