Chapter 79
1 tried to move, but something had pierced my left leg-a metal rod from the collapsing structure. When I looked down, I saw it
protruding from my thigh, blood pooling around it.
Not again. Please, not fire again.

The smoke burned my lungs. Each breath felt like inhaling broken glass. My vision blurred, but suddenly my mind cleared with horrible,
perfect clarity.
I’d been here before.
Not this warehouse, but this situation. Trapped in fire, waiting to die. Teenage Blake unconscious beside me. My back crushed under a beam. Talking about my dreams while we waited for rescue that might never come.
That wasn’t Emma’s story. It was mine.
The revelation should have mattered more, but right now I just needed to breathe. My baby needed oxygen.
My stomach cramped. Sharp and sudden.
No, no, no. Please, little one. Hold on.
Another cramp, harder this time. I felt wetness between my legs-blood or amniotic fluid, I couldn’t tell.
“Help!” I tried to scream, but smoke choked the word into a rasp. “Somebody help!”

“The kidnapper started a fire!”
“Mr. Morgan, it’s too dangerous! Don’t go in there-
My eyes burned from smoke, but I forced them open. Through the flames and haze, I saw him.
Blake stood at the entrance, illuminated by fire. Our eyes met across the inferno.

My eyes burned with tears that had nothing to do with smoke. Blood soaked through my clothes. My baby kicked weakly, then stopped.
Blake looked away first.
Then Jack appeared beside him, grabbing Blake’s arm. His face twisted with panic.
Mr. Morgan, Aria and Emma are both in there!” Jack’s voice cracked. “The structure’s collapsing! We can only get one out safely-maybe
not even that!”
“What do we do?”
Jack’s words hit me harder than any physical blow. The choice. Of course there was a choice.
And I already knew who Blake would pick.
