Chapter 67
I grabbed it like a lifeline. Anything to escape this interrogation.
“Aria, dear!” Elaine Grant’s warm voice filled my ear. “I hope I’m not calling too late.”

‘Mrs. Grant. I turned away from Blake’s stare. ‘Is everything okay?”
“I’ve been feeling terrible about the party. Her voice dropped, heavy with guilt. “What happened to you-the injury-Richard and I can’t stop thinking about it.”
At least someone feels guilty.
“It’s fine, really-
“It’s not fine. We should have noticed sooner. Should have helped.” She paused. “Emma’s been devastated too. She wants to apologize
properly.”
Emma. Devastated. Right.
“Mrs. Grant, you don’t need to-
“We’re planning a picnic tomorrow in Central Park. Just family. Emma’s insisting-she wants to make amends. She’s even preparing a
special gift for you.”
Emma wants to apologize. Emma’s preparing gifts. Emma, Emma, Emma.
‘I don’t know if that’s-”
“Please, Aria. Let us do this. Emma needs to make this right, and Richard and I would love to spend time with you and Blake. Away from all the drama and crowds.” Her voice softened. ‘You deserve better than what happened at that party.”
The sincerity in her voice got to me. The Grants had always been kind. And maybe-maybe Emma really did feel bad. Maybe this could be
a fresh start.
“Okay,’ I heard myself say. ‘We’ll come.”
“Wonderful! Nine o’clock tomorrow. Oh, should we invite your mother too?”
My mother. The woman who’d watched me bleed and done nothing.
“No.” The word came out harder than intended. “Just us is fine.”
“Of course, dear. We’ll see you tomorrow.”
I hung up and turned to find Blake watching me.

‘The Grants invited us to a picnic tomorrow,” I said flatly. “I accepted.”
He nodded once, then walked out without another word.

Perfect. Another fun family outing to look forward to.
The next morning came too fast. I’d barely slept, replaying Blake’s accusations over and over. Were you with Matthew? Did you touch him
like this?
Like I was some kind of cheater. Like our contract marriage meant I owed him fidelity when he couldn’t even give me basic respect.
But the picnic might be nice. The Grants were trying. And Emma-maybe she really did want to apologize.
Stop being naive, I told myself while packing the picnic basket. Emma Grant doesn’t apologize. She performs.
Still, I packed carefully. Fresh fruit, gourmet sandwiches, Blake’s favorite coconut biscuits. If this was going to be awkward, at least the
food would be good.
