Chapter 66

“Aria-

I’ll think about it, okay? That’s all I can offer right now.”

I left him standing there and took a taxi home, my mind spinning. Matthew didn’t know about his mother’s threats. My own mother wasn’t my biological mother. Blake threw coffee cups when I was too compliant. Jacob wanted me dead because I rejected him in college.

My life is a disaster.

The Hampton estate was quiet when I arrived. Too quiet. I found Blake in the living room, cradling his right hand. Blood seeped between his fingers, and fragments of something-glass? porcelain?-littered the floor around him.

The coffee cup. He’d crushed it with his bare hand.

“Why didn’t you call someone?” I asked.

“Stop standing there gaping. His voice was tight with pain. “Come help me.”

“Mr. Morgan, you need professional medical attention. I might make it worse-

“I cleaned your wounds. The words came out harsh, accusatory. “Every cut. Every splinter. And you can’t return the favor?”

Guilt. He knows exactly which buttons to push.

He had taken care of me, even if his motives were questionable.

I fetched the first aid kit, kneeling beside him to examine the damage. Glass shards embedded in his palm, blood welling from multiple cuts. Why had he crushed the cup? What was wrong with this man?

Working carefully, I extracted each piece of glass with tweezers. Blake stayed silent, jaw clenched, watching me work. I cleaned the wounds with antiseptic, then applied antibiotic ointment.

As I wrapped the bandage around his hand, I pressed my fingers gently against his wrist to check his pulse-making sure the wrapping wasn’t too tight, that blood flow remained normal. My touch lingered there, soft and careful, my fingertips resting against his warm skin

longer than necessary.

Blake went rigid.

His fingers trembled against mine. When I looked up, his eyes had turned dark and dangerous.

I kept my fingers there, counting the beats. One, two, three-

Blake’s other hand caught my wrist.

“You always this thorough? His voice came out low, dangerous.

I jerked back. “Just being careful. Blood flow is important-

“With everyone?” His grip tightened. “Or just me?”

“What?”

“Did you check Matthew Redwood’s pulse too?” The question hung between us, sharp as broken glass. “When you were treating his

wounds?”

Oh God. Not this again.

“Mr. Morgan, I was just-

“Answer the question.” He pulled me closer, eyes locked on mine. “Did you touch him like this?”

My temper flared. “When we were kids, Matthew got hurt all the time. I helped. That’s it.”

“That’s it?” Blake laughed, but there was nothing funny about it. “And yesterday? When you disappeared after work-were you helping him

then too?”

“Are you seriously-

“Simple question, Aria. Were you with Matthew?”

The accusation hit like a slap. He thinks I’m cheating. After everything-after I’ve done nothing but try to be the perfect contract wife—he thinks I’m sneaking around with Matthew.

“If you want to accuse me of something, just say it.” I yanked my hand free. “But don’t throw mud at me and pretend you’re asking

innocent questions.

Blake’s jaw clenched so tight I heard his teeth grind. The silence stretched between us, suffocating.

The phone shattered it.
