Chapter 228

Social media was exploding with speculation. Some claimed Emma killed herself out of guilt. Others pointed to suspicious injuries and mysterious figures spotted near the scene.
I should have felt vindicated. Instead, I felt sick. The timing was too convenient.
Was Emma really dead? Or was this another of her elaborate schemes?
I needed to see Peak Zero for myself.
“Mommy, why do you look scared?” Aurora tugged my sleeve, her face crumpling. “Is William getting sicker?”
“No, baby,” I reassured her. “Something happened in New York, that’s all.”
Aurora ran to William’s bed and grabbed his hand. “You promised you wouldn’t get worse!”
William, looking exhausted but alert, rolled his eyes. “I’m fine, Aurora. The doctors said I’m stable, remember?” He turned to me. “Mom, did they tell you about the bone marrow results yet?”
“Not yet,” I said. “We should know in a couple days.”
‘Why did you pretend to be asleep when Blake came yesterday?” I asked.
William’s cheeks reddened. “He kissed my forehead. What was I supposed to do? Big men getting all mushy – I don’t know how to handle
that stuff.”
I smiled despite everything. “That’s just how fathers show they care about their sons.”
William didn’t answer, but I noticed him touching the spot where Blake had kissed him, his expression softening slightly.
Aurora suddenly stood up straight. “If Uncle Blake can help William get better, then I’ll let him be my daddy.”
William snorted. “Don’t use me as an excuse, Rory. If you want him to be your dad, that’s your decision.”
Aurora’s face turned red. “I’m not making excuses! I don’t want to talk to you anymore!” She stomped out of the room, pouting
dramatically.
Later, I went to Matthew’s office searching for clues. Outside, I found Richard and Elaine with Matthew’s assistant. Elaine was crying, confused about why Matthew had disappeared. She wondered if their questions about his injuries had upset him, but Richard didn’t think
So.
When I asked about unusual events, the assistant hesitated before mentioning an anonymous package that had disturbed Matthew. He had

saved the envelope, which had no sender information but familiar handwriting that made my heart race. Richard noticed my reaction as I
studied the address.
I pocketed the envelope, knowing this could be the key to finding Matthew, though dread filled me about what I might discover
Around 11 PM, exhausted from worry and sleepless nights, I dozed off on a bench outside William’s room. In my dreams, I was hanging
over a cliff edge, about to fall into darkness.
A warm hand caught me, pulling me back to safety.
I jerked awake to find Blake sitting beside me, looking tired. His hair was messy, eyes bloodshot.
“Sorry,” he said. “Didn’t mean to wake you. You looked uncomfortable.”
“I thought you wouldn’t show up again,” I said bitterly. “Since you broke your promise about Emma’s test results.”
Blake ran a hand through his hair. “Emma’s cliff jump wasn’t something I expected. There were suspicious vehicles and construction crews that helped stage her ‘suicide.”
“Is she really dead?” I asked, staring at him.
He shook his head. ‘I can’t confirm it. The car owner died of a heart attack. The construction crew disappeared.”
“Whoever’s behind this has bigger plans,” Blake added.
“We don’t need to chase them,’ I said calmly. “They’ll show themselves eventually.”
Blake looked troubled. “As long as Emma’s missing, you’ll see me as someone who breaks promises.”
‘Don’t flatter yourself,” I snapped. “You’re not important enough to occupy my thoughts.”
My hand trembled with exhaustion, and my water glass slipped, shattering on the floor. When I bent to pick up the pieces, a sharp edge cut my fingertip. Blood welled from the cut.
I grabbed a tissue, but Blake caught my wrist, bringing my finger to his mouth. He gently sucked the wound, his eyes on mine.
My pulse raced. I yanked my hand away, cheeks burning. “What are you doing?”
“Sorry,” Blake said, looking embarrassed. “Instinct.”
“Aren’t you disgusted? You used to hate blood.”
His eyes darkened. “You taste sweet.”

Just then, a nurse walked up to us.
“Ms. Taylor, Mr. Morgan? The doctor needs to see you about the test results.”
