Chapter 148
‘Thank you for your help,” I said, straightening my dress. “I didn’t expect things to escalate like that.”
“Your composure under pressure impresses me, Samuel replied. “I’d like you to manage my family’s annual art exhibition. We need
someone with your… fortitude.”
I saw my opening and decided to take it. “What about collaborating to showcase the Scott family’s private collection for offline exhibitions? Your pieces deserve a wider audience.”
Samuel’s eyebrows shot up. “Those pieces are the foundation of our family’s standing. My preferred platform would be Morgan Retail Group. He studied me carefully. “But I’m willing to give you a chance. I won’t rush into signing with anyone yet.”
When I got home after the party, Olivia made me an offer: “With Aurora’s dancing talent, she should sign up for the new kids’ division in this year’s dance competition. That girl’s a natural dancer.” And we decided to go for it.
Two days later, I carefully applied makeup to Aurora’s face on competition day. Her Persian-inspired costume sparkled in the morning light as I adjusted the delicate fabric.
“Hold still, sweetie,” I said, adjusting a hairpin. “Almost done.”
“Will I look pretty, Mommy?” Aurora asked, wiggling impatiently. “Like the dancers on TV?”
“You already are pretty,” I assured her, “but today you’ll shine extra bright.”
“Aurora wants to be the brightest star!” she declared, using her name instead of “I like many kids her age. “Aurora gonna dance and twirl
and everybody gonna clap!”
I smiled at her enthusiasm. “Yes, they will. Now let’s check your hair one more time.”
‘Is my tiara gonna fall off?” she asked, touching it nervously. “Don’t want it to fall when Aurora spins.”
“It’s completely secured,” I promised, making one final adjustment. “Ready to go downstairs and show everyone?”
She nodded excitedly, bouncing on her toes.
I took Aurora’s small hand as we walked downstairs, her elaborate dress rustling with each step. My heart swelled with pride watching her carefully navigate the stairs in her costume.
Olivia screamed when she saw us. “Oh my God! Wasn’t Aurora supposed to be going to her competition? Why is there a fairy princess here
instead?”
Aurora giggled, clapping her hands with delight. ‘Godmommy, it’s me, Aurora!” Her face sparkled with delicate makeup, eyes bright with

excitement. “Do I look so good you don’t know me?”
*Aurora still Aurora!” she added, twirling in place. “Just fancy today!”

Ethan, who had been playing with William on the floor with toy cars, looked up. His eyes widened as he saw Aurora.
“Aurora always looks good with or without fancy clothes,” he said solemnly. “Ethan can always recognize Aurora.
The tips of his ears turned bright red as William rolled his eyes with a knowing expression.
Olivia knelt beside Aurora. ‘You look straight out of a fairy tale, sweetie. You remind me so much of your mother when she was little.”
She glanced up at me with a frown. “Speaking of which, why are you still making yourself look hideous on your daughter’s big day? The whole ‘mysterious scarred businesswoman’ act is getting old.”
Aurora tugged my sleeve. “Mommy, I want to see your pretty face when I’m dancing. Can you please not put those scary centipede scars on your face today? You can wear your mask if you have to, but no scary scars, please?”
I touched my face reflexively. My disguise had two layers of protection – the mask and the prosthetic scars I applied underneath. Even if my mask slipped, the fake scars would prevent anyone from recognizing me. It was a system that had kept me safe for years.
But today was my daughter’s first competition. The pleading in her eyes melted my resolve.
‘I promise, just the mask today, no scars,” I told her, smoothing her hair. “And if I can manage it, I’ll try to take the mask off when you perform. I want you to see me cheering for you.”
