Chapter 140

“Matthew uncle! Aurora squealed, her previous complaint instantly forgotten.

I looked up, shocked to see Matthew standing there, holding my daughter like it was the most natural thing in the world. Wasn’t he

supposed to be volunteering at some medical program across the country?

Three years had changed him. His face looked more mature now, more grounded, but those eyes still had that same handsome yet slightly dangerous charm that made all the nurses at Redwood Medical Center go gaga behind their stations.

“Aurora baby,” Matthew said, bouncing her slightly, “a few months without seeing Uncle Matthew and this little heartbreaker’s forgotten

all about me, huh?”

Matthew sometimes flies to Europe to visit my two kids.

“Nuh-uh! Aurora misses you thiiiis much!” my daughter protested, stretching her arms as wide as possible before throwing them around his neck. “Aurora thinks about you all the time!”

His grin widened. “Well then, since we’ve both been missing each other so bad, why don’t you come stay with Uncle Matthew tonight?

How about that, princess?”

Aurora’s face fell instantly. She shot me a panicked look that screamed “Help me!” Her eyes practically begged, “Save me, Mommy. Aurora

wants to stay with you.”

‘Matthew, knock it off,” I said firmly. “Put her back in her booster seat, please.”

He did as asked but kept that annoying smile. “So what brings you guys out for dessert? Olivia mentioned you’d be in town, but didn’t expect to bump into you so soon.”

‘Actually, I needed to talk to you about something,” I admitted. “I need your help with a situation.”

“Anything for you, Aria. You know that.” His voice dropped to that sincere tone he always used when we were alone.

‘Matthew, thanks. You’re seriously my best friend.”

He leaned closer, his voice barely audible. “I could be more than just your friend. But William chose that exact moment to announce at full volume that he needed to pee, drowning out Matthew’s words.

When the kids got distracted with their desserts again, Matthew continued. “I’ve never helped anyone for free though. You know how I

roll.”

I nodded. ‘I know I’m working on paying you back for everything.”

My eyes darted to the kids. This involved Blake, and little ears were way too sharp these days. Let’s talk about it later

Matthew followed my gaze and got it immediately. ‘So, why didn’t Richard and Elaine come back with you? Or is there someone specific

you came back to see?”

The question wasn’t subtle. I knew exactly what he was fishing for.

“They had work stuff. Plus, we thought traveling together might raise red flags. Blake might get suspicious if the Grants suddenly showed

up with a woman my age.”

Matthew’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “Makes sense.”

His phone buzzed. After checking it, his face changed. “Gotta run. Emergency at the hospital. We’ll catch up tomorrow.” He squeezed my shoulder, then gave me one last look-intense and filled with something I couldn’t quite read-before rushing off.

Back at Olivia’s house, Aurora sprawled across the sofa, half-asleep from chocolate cake overload. Her chubby cheeks still had frosting smudges, and a satisfied smile played on her lips.

Come on, sleepyhead,” Ethan said, tugging Aurora’s hand. “We gotta brush teeth!”

“Mommy, I need the small chair,” Aurora mumbled, letting herself be led toward the bathroom.

I’ll grab it, sweetie, Olivia called after them, heading to the bathroom.

I straightened William’s rumpled collar, getting ready to take him for bedtime prep.

“Mom, William said suddenly, his voice weirdly serious for a three-year-old. “You can have your own happy too. We wont be mad

I froze, my hands still on his collar. “What?”

“You and Matthew uncle. It’s okay if you like him. Me and Aurora want you to be happy.”
