Chapter 135

I grabbed my phone from the nightstand, squinting at the bright screen in the dim morning light. No response. The message I sent to Mr.
Mysterious’ last night remained unanswered, just a single checkmark showing it had been delivered but not read.
“Thank God I didn’t call,” I muttered, remembering Olivia’s advice. My finger hovered over the contact for a moment before I tossed the
phone onto my bed.
Movement at my doorway caught my attention. Aurora stood there, half-hidden behind the doorframe, her little fingers clutching the wood as she peeked in. Her eyes were wide and uncertain, still remembering our disagreement from yesterday.
My heart melted instantly. No matter how necessary discipline was, seeing my daughter afraid to approach me was unbearable. Yesterday’s incident still haunts me-I caught her slipping into the garden alone at midnight, standing right by that fountain. After what happened to my father, I can’t bear the thought of her going anywhere near water.
But looking at her now, with those big eyes and quivering lower lip, the anger was completely gone, replaced by overwhelming relief and
love.
I set my phone down and opened my arms wide. “Sweetie, don’t ya wanna hug Mommy today?”
Her face lit up instantly. She bolted across the room and threw herself into my arms with such force I almost fell backward.
“Mommy’s not mad at Aurora anymore,” she whispered against my neck, her voice thick with emotion despite her attempt at her usual third-person speech. “Aurora is sooooo happy…”
I kissed her soft cheeks, feeling a painful tightness in my chest. Her eyes were slightly red, and I wondered if my little girl had been crying before coming to find me. The thought sent a wave of acid through my stomach.
‘Mommy loves you tons and tons,” I whispered, hugging her tighter. “But you can’t run away again, got it? You scared the heck outta me.”
“Aurora promises,” she said solemnly, her small hands framing my face. “No more ‘sploring without Mommy.”
I looked up to see William and Ethan watching us from the hallway. Neither looked surprised by our reconciliation. William, my three- year-old old soul, had that knowing look he often wore-understanding things far beyond his years.
Ethan, Olivia’s son, stood beside him with his arms crossed. He was the oldest of the three and took his role as protector seriously. I could tell he’d been worried about Aurora, but he also understood why I had to be firm with her yesterday. Running off alone in a new place wasn’t something I could let slide, no matter how adorable her apology.
As I caught their eyes, both boys gave small nods of approval. The ‘timeout’ had worked. Aurora had learned her lesson. The matter was
closed.

Chapter 135
:
Behind them, Olivia appeared, her arms outstretched toward the boys. “C’mon, who wants a morning hug?” she called cheerfully.
Both boys walked straight past her without a second glance, heading directly to their seats at the breakfast table.
Olivia dropped her arms with a dramatic sigh. See, this is why daughters are better. Where’s that ultrasound tech who told me I was having a boy? I need to file a complaint and demand he give me back my soft, cuddly daughter!”
I couldn’t help laughing at her theatrical performance. Olivia’s ability to find humor in any situation was one of the reasons we’d
remained best friends for twenty years.
“Don’t sweat it, I’ll share mine,” I said, turning Aurora to face her godmother. “Aurora, your godmother’s feeling sad. Give her some love.”
Aurora immediately mimicked my sympathetic expression. “Godmother sad? Aurora make better!” she said in her sweet voice, patting
Olivia’s hand.
Olivia scooped her up, squeezing her dramatically. “Aurora, baby, just words ain’t gonna cut it! I need big hugs and kisses!”
