The CEO's Regret: His Lost Wife's Secret Twins novel Chapter 133

Chapter 133

AURORA

“Wheee, I’m flying!” I shouted. My legs kicked in the air like when I swim. Who picked me up? I turned my head real fast to see.

It was the nice man from before! The one whose fancy shoes got all messy when I dropped chocolate cake on them. He didn’t get mad at

me then. He just smiled.

“Hi, mister!” I waved right in his face. “Why are you here?”

He had tired eyes but smiled at me anyway. His hair was super neat and his clothes looked expensive.

“Just taking a walk to think about some things.”

He put me down on a bench. His hands were super gentle. He was so tall! Taller than anyone I ever saw!

“What about you, Aurora? Why are you here all by yourself?” He looked around the empty garden. “Where’s your mom?”

My tummy felt funny and tight. I wasn’t supposed to be here alone. Mommy would be super mad.

“I’m just out for a walk too…” I scratched my head, trying to think of something good. Then I pointed at my feet. “Mommy got me these pretty dancing shoes, so I wanted to show them off!”

The man looked down at my red shoes. His face got soft and sad at the same time.

“Those are beautiful shoes,” he said in a quiet voice. “Red velvet. Very elegant for such a little lady.”

I stood up and did a twirl. “They’re for my ballet class! Mommy says I’m the best dancer in my class. I can do a whole routine without

falling down!”

He watched me for a long time. Then his face got serious.

‘Your mommy got you lovely shoes, but you shouldn’t be out here alone without telling anyone. This place can be dangerous.”

I stopped twirling. My eyes started feeling hot and wet. “Are you mad at me?”

“No, Aurora,” he said my name so soft. ‘I’m not angry. I just want you to be safe. What if you got hurt and nobody knew where to find

you?”

A big tear rolled down my face. “I’m sorry, sir. I won’t do this again.”

He reached out with his funny-looking hand-the one that didn’t move right-and wiped my tear away real careful.

I’m not scolding you,” he said. “I just want you to always be safe and healthy.”

I nodded, feeling better now. He wasn’t mad after all.

  • )

“Tell you what,” he said. “If you promise to always let your mommy know where you are, I’ll get you another pair of dancing shoes. Even prettier ones.

I shook my head super fast. “No thank you! Mommy says we can’t take presents from strangers. It’s a rule.”

His eyes got sad again. “Am I a stranger, Aurora?”

I had to think hard about this question. “Well… you know my name. And I dropped cake on your shoes. So maybe you’re not a complete

stranger. Maybe you’re a… special friend?”

That made him smile. A real smile that made his eyes crinkle.

“Yes, a special friend. I think that works.”

He looked up at the sky. The sun made half his face bright and half dark.

“You know, Aurora, you made my bad day better. For a little while, I forgot about being sad.”

“Why are you sad?” I asked, swinging my legs back and forth on the bench.

“Because I can’t find someone. A girl who was very important to me.”

“Did she get lost?” I asked. Getting lost was super scary. I got lost in the store once and cried until Mommy found me.

“Something happened,” he said. “I’ve been looking for her for a long time.”

He looked so sad that I did what Mommy does when I’m sad. I gave him a big hug. His body went all stiff at first, then he hugged me

back, even with his hurt hand.

“Thank you, Aurora,” he whispered. “You’re a very sweet girl.”

“My mommy says hugs fix everything,’ I told him. “She gives the best hugs in the whole wide world. Even better than ice cream!”

He nodded. “Your mommy sounds very wise.”

“Who’s the girl you’re looking for? Is she little?”

“No, she’s grown up now. But she had the most beautiful green eyes. Even prettier than stars in the night sky. Just exactly your color.”

I gasped so loud! My eyes got super big!

:

‘That sounds just exactly my mommy! William says mommy and I have the same eyes!”

The man went super still. He didn’t even blink. Then he asked in a funny voice: “Your mommy?”

((.

“Uh-huh! William always says mommy’s eyes are special, just mine! Everyone says we look the same!” I bounced up and down on the

bench. This was so exciting!

He stared at me real hard, then touched my hair, fixing it where it was messy.

“The person I’m looking for… she doesn’t have children,” he said in a slow voice.

I laughed because grown-ups can be so silly sometimes. “William is my mommy’s baby. And Ethan is my godmommy’s baby.”

Now he looked all confused. Grown-ups get confused a lot.

“Your godmother’s baby?” he asked.

“Yep! Ethan’s bigger than me and William. He doesn’t like playing dolls but he shares his toys with me sometimes.”

The man opened his mouth to say something else when his phone made a loud noise. He looked at it and his eyebrows got all scrunchy.

“I have to take this,” he said.

I stood up from the bench. “I should go home anyway. Mommy might be looking for me.”

He nodded, still looking at his phone. “Let me drive you home.”

“No thanks!” I said super fast. Mommy would be REALLY mad if I came home in a stranger’s car. “I live super close. Just over there!” I

pointed to some trees.

“At least take my number,” he said. “In case you need anything. Or if you want to tell me more about your mommy sometime.”

“Okay! But I don’t have a phone or paper.

He smiled and picked up a big yellow leaf from the ground. Then he took out a fancy pen and wrote numbers on the leaf.

“Here,” he said, giving me the leaf. “Keep this safe.”

I folded the leaf careful and put it in my pocket. “I will! And I’m sorry again about your shoes. Mommy says we should pay people back

when we break their things.”

“Don’t worry about it,” he said, standing up. He was really, really tall from down here.

I started walking away, then turned and waved. “Bye, sir! Drive safe when you go!”

He waved back with a small smile. I skipped away, my heart bubbling with happiness. I’d made a new friend! And he knew someone with eyes just like Mommy’s!

I couldn’t wait to tell William about the sad man looking for someone with Mommy’s eyes. But maybe I shouldn’t mention being in the

garden alone. That would be our secret.

I clutched the leaf with the phone number and ran toward home. The flower behind my ear fell out, but I didn’t turn back. Maybe the sad

man would find it and smile again.
