Olivia reached for William, but he nimbly sidestepped her attempt to hug him. She laughed and gave chase. Soon, Aurora and Ethan
joined the impromptu game of tag, their laughter echoing through the spacious living room.
I stayed back, reattaching my mask with practiced movements. The prosthetics settled uncomfortably against my skin, but the disguise was necessary. Each time I put it on, I felt both relief and resentment – relief for the protection it offered and resentment that I needed it
at all.
The doorbell rang just as I finished.
“I’ll get it,” Ivy said, heading toward the entrance.
When she opened the door, two elderly people stood there-a woman dripping with ostentatious jewelry and a man in a costly but somehow tacky suit. Their expressions were identical masks of entitlement and disdain.
“Olivia!” the woman demanded without greeting. “Where is our grandson? Hand him over immediately!”
Olivia froze mid-laugh, her face draining of color. “How did you find this place?” she asked.
