The next day

Aria’s birthday was today. She hadn’t been herself since her dad died, and I was hoping the party would lift her spirits and maybe help us

get back on track.

Jack walked into my study holding a small velvet box.

“The butterfly necklace is ready, sir. The jeweler just delivered it this morning.

I took the box and opened it. The platinum butterfly pendant sparkled in the morning light, diamonds catching the sun.

She was going to love this.

“The jeweler followed your design exactly,” Jack said. “Fifty-seven diamonds in total, and they engraved her name on the back like you

requested.

I turned the pendant over. There it was-“Aria” in delicate script, hidden where only she would see it. The butterfly’s wings were positioned mid-flight, just like she’d described her favorite piece from that auction catalog she’d shown me months ago.

“Did they get the size right?” I asked.

“Exactly as you specified. Dainty enough for everyday wear, but the diamonds make it special.”

I smiled. She always said she hated flashy jewelry, but this… this she’ll wear.

“If I may say, sir, these birthday preparations are… a lot.”

No kidding. I’d taken over planning from my mother Elizabeth, who usually handled family events. The dress had arrived from Paris this morning. The roses were being arranged right now. I’d hired the best fireworks team on the East Coast and a party planner who worked

for celebrities.

“Every detail matters, Jack. I want everything perfect.”

I wanted to see her smile again. Really smile, not that polite expression she’d been wearing since the funeral.

Jack nodded slowly. “The guest list is confirmed. The caterers are preparing the menu. The musicians arrive this afternoon for setup.”

“And the lighting?”

“Being installed as we speak. Soft gold throughout the ballroom, exactly as you requested.”

I walked to the window. Outside, workers were setting up the tent in the garden for the outdoor portion of the party. White fabric billowed in the breeze.

Tonight, she would walk through those doors and forget everything for a while. Just one perfect evening.

“Sir, I never thought I’d see Blake Morgan personally overseeing birthday decorations.”

I turned around. “People change, Jack.”

For her, I’d do anything.

Back at my desk, I opened the jewelry box again. The butterfly had fifty-seven diamonds, each placed exactly where I’d designed them.

I’d spent five nights sketching this design until my hand cramped.

“Will she actually like it?” The question slipped out.

Jack looked surprised by my uncertainty. “She likes delicate things, so… yes, I think she will.”

I closed the box. “Don’t mention this to her. I want it to be a surprise.”

“Maybe you could hint that you have something special coming,” Jack suggested.

I shook my head. “She wouldn’t give a damn right now anyway. This morning she’s meeting someone about the surveillance stuff. Her

head’s totally wrapped up in that investigation.”

Jack shifted. “About that investigation, sir. My team found evidence of tampering in over a hundred surveillance videos, just like Mrs.

Morgan suspected.”

He hesitated. ‘Mrs. Morgan has great instincts. The way she found that evidence… I’m impressed. He paused. ‘Sir, what do you plan to do

about-

“What do you think I should do, Jack?’ My voice turned cold, and he backed down.

“I should get back to reviewing those records,’ he said quickly, heading for the door.

As Jack left, I heard movement in the hallway. Arla appeared in a light pink dress, holding car keys.

“Where are you headed?” I asked.

“Meeting that witness I mentioned. They finally agreed to share their dashcam footage with me.”

Something made me step closer. Aria- I reached out, my fingers brushing her wrist. Her skin felt warm. When you’re done at the police

station, don’t stay out too long. I… I have something for you.”

My voice sounded different-lower, almost tender. I felt nervous, like a teenager giving his first gift.
