The Bride He Took For Granted novel Chapter 36

Chapter 36

“Yes, sir. Who would you like me to look into?”

Harold opened his mouth, then stopped.

“Never mind. It’s nothing.”

He ended the call.

What am I doing?

He and Elise weren’t even friends. They were just neighbors who had helped each other out a few times.

He had no business digging into her private life.

By then, Elise had calmed down.

She went back to the living room for her phone, trying to decide who she could call.

Landon’s driver and his executive assistant were out of the question. Either of them would report everything to Victor the first chance they got.

levelheaded. He was also easygoing, and nearly everyone at the company liked him.

Elise didn’t have his number saved, but they had each other on WhatsApp. They had simply never spoken there before.

She called him through the app.

Jason might have already been asleep. The phone rang several times before he answered.

“Elise?” Surprise was clear in his voice.

“It’s me. Sorry to call so late.”

“No, you’re fine. What’s wrong?”

Elise got straight to the point. “Landon’s drunk. Can you come get him?”

She heard Jason moving around on the other end.

“Send me the address. I’m on my way.”

With some effort, Elise propped Landon against the wall.

At least this way, it looked less like someone had knocked him

unconscious.

Jason arrived at her door less than twenty minutes later.

He immediately noticed her red-rimmed eyes. Concern crossed

his face.

“Did he get drunk and start causing trouble?”

Harold had kicked Landon hard. There was no hiding that something had happened.

But Elise didn’t answer the question.

“I kicked him,” she said. “Then he passed out.”

Jason looked surprised. He clearly hadn’t expected Elise to hit

anyone.

He glanced down at Landon before turning back to her.

“Don’t panic. His color looks fine, and he’s breathing normally. He’s probably okay.”

Elise nodded.

“I’ll take him to the hospital and have him checked out,” Jason said. “I’ll let you know as soon as I know anything.”

“Thank you.”

Jason hauled Landon up and headed toward the elevator. Before

leaving, he turned back to her.

“Make sure you lock the door.”

Elise nodded gratefully. “Okay.”

******

At 1:15 a.m., Elise received a message from Jason.

[They ran some tests. He has a bruise on his stomach and a pretty big bump on his head, but otherwise he’s fine.]

Elise replied immediately.

[Thanks. Send me the bill.]

[Don’t worry about it. They’ll bill him directly.]

[Thank you.]

[One more thing-you live alone. Don’t open the door that late, no matter who it is.]

[I know. I wasn’t thinking tonight. Thanks for reminding me.]

[Okay, no more thanking me. You’re going to make me think I’m a hero or something.]

He tried to piece together the night before. Then he turned and saw Jason asleep beside him.

Why am I here? Did Jason do this?

Landon kicked him hard in the leg.
