"In this life, a matebond was reawakened. The first matebond ever given by the Moon Goddess to wolf-kind, given to the First King of Wolves. In his second life, it was the matebond he sacrificed to save her life and their unborn child’s after receiving a vampire bite."
The thought of Fin ever having a vampire bite made Serena feel sick. Her hand found his where it rested against her stomach and she swallowed down a lump in the back of her throat. Her fingers closed around his and squeezed. The squeeze was small, quiet, delivered without turning around or looking up, a communication so private it existed entirely in the pressure of her grip and the way his fingers tightened in response.
Her eyes flicked to Gavriel who had gone pale as a ghost. The mental image of him bitten would keep her up at night without question. He had no idea she had been crying over him, trying to save him. She wasn’t even sure if he knew that he was bitten.
What Serena didn’t know was that the pale face she was looking at had nothing to do with empathy and everything to do with ’oh fuck.’
Because Serena was right about one thing and wrong about another. She was correct about him not knowing she cried over him. But that also meant he didn’t understand that she had cured him.
Gavriel knew he had been bitten by a vampire and didn’t mention it to anyone. He forgot about it at one point, actually, and figured it’d just go away and the mages were being dramatic. But by the sounds of it, his soul was damned.
"In death, the moon blood was reunited with her fae magic. Only the purest fated mates can pull one soul back. His mark bound her soul and her wolf to his. "
Fin’s chin dipped. The movement pressed his jaw against the top of her head. His arm pulled her a fraction closer somehow, which should have been impossible because he was out of fractions. The distance between them was already measured in thread counts, and Fin was still finding ways to close it.
The whispers paused.
The pause was different from the others. The deliberate, dramatic pauses the ancestors used for effect were performed. Intentional. Carrying the theatrical timing of beings who had been dead long enough to perfect their delivery and enjoyed the craft.
This pause was genuine.
Murmuring filled the chamber. Low, overlapping, the sound of many voices conferring in hushed tones that bled through the veil between the dead and the living like conversation through a thin wall.
Serena recognized fragments but not enough to understand. But the tone of it was clear as day: this was a quick huddle. The dead were having a staff meeting. In the middle of their own presentation. Talking about something clearly meant to be private but they had forgotten to mute themselves.
She had never heard them do this.
The roasting, the warnings, the prophecies, the commentary on Hyran’s mirror rehearsals and Aeron’s burn book and Hale’s inability to ask Elara to the ball, all of it had been delivered with the polished confidence of ancestors who had prepared their material and knew their audience.
This was different. They were mapping something. Tracing it. Cross-referencing events across lifetimes with the frantic energy of archivists who had just been handed a pattern that didn’t match any pattern in their records and were trying to determine if the records were wrong or if the pattern was new.
It sounded exactly like the mage-librarians. Except the library was a volcano, the scholars were dead, and the thing in the margins was alive, standing in the room, and had recently yawned at them.
Gavriel looked at Fin. Fin looked at Gavriel. The look translated to: are the dead people gossiping about us? The answer was yes. The dead people were gossiping about us. In front of us.
The murmuring went on for twelve full seconds, which was a lot considering they operated outside of time. Whatever they had found was significant enough to make infinity pause and recount.
Finally, the whispers resolved back into a single voice.
"The symmetry is like nothing the ancestors have witnessed before."
"A third Alpha in this chamber is interesting indeed."

"In this life, born as a Gamma in rank."
"Son of a Dragon Blood High House. The right hand of the Dragon King in this life and the last. A second son to the Wise King."
