The fire told Tiberon Drakenfell everything he needed to know before the ancestors spoke.
His Gamma’s green was now burning alongside the gold that had just confirmed the deepest kind of matebond. Deeper than just spanning lifetimes. Moon Goddess blessed. Seen as myth by most.
The implications of that sat in Tiberon’s chest. He hadn’t decided what he was going to do with that information yet. Some things were better just left alone, and he was leaning towards that and omitting the emerald part out of the story to Hyran. Somewhere the gods were laughing because Tiberon Drakenfell, a man who had built an empire on information, was voluntarily choosing to join the golden retrievers.
The fire burned. The ceiling glowed. Four wolves stood around a basin in a volcanic cave, bleeding from their palms, watching their blood burn in colors that told a story none of them were ready to read aloud.
And the woman at the center of all of it leaned against the man behind her, coughed once more, and waited for whatever the flame would say next.
WHOOSH.
As fast as it had hit the ceiling, the fire lowered back to a normal height.
Whispers began, spoken by many mouths sharing one voice. Layered. Ancient. The sound of a chorus that had been waiting inside stone for millennia and had finally been given an audience worth addressing.
Gavriel yawned. Fin didn’t so much as bat an eye. And Serena’s expression said, here we go again.
Tiberon’s eye twitched for the second time in that chamber. He needed a glass of whiskey.
The whispers also seemed taken aback by the lack of reaction.
"We would like it noted that none of them reacted."
There was another pause, loaded with the wounded dignity of beings who had rehearsed this moment for ten thousand years and delivered it to an audience of three golden retrievers and a statue named Tiberon.
"The ancestors remember a time when mortals trembled. When the whispering of the dead turned grown warriors pale. When kings dropped to their knees at the sound of voices from the flame."
The fire flickered once. If fire could sigh, this one did.
"We are losing our touch."
This was the wrong damn group of people. The ancestors chose to move on with the weary professionalism of performers who had just bombed the opening number and still had a full set to get through.
"Ah yes. What do we have here."
The fire shifted, warming by a degree, as if the ancestors were leaning forward in their collective seats.
"Interesting indeed. Three of the most powerful Alphas alive are here. All with dragon bloodlines."

"The first Alpha in this chamber is standing in for his son. Incarnate of the Wise King. Father of the First Dragon King and adopted father of the Sovereign’s Second, the High Brother-Commander, who is also in this room."
"In this life, he is King of Drakenfell and the most powerful king in Skardos. The one who traded what fate gave him and tried to fix it too late. A secret has been kept for twenty-four years."
