Three hundred and forty
Barbara POV
“She’s a curse!” I screamed, pacing my mother’s bedroom as she sat frozen on the bed, still in her nightgown, her hair loose around her shoulders.
“I always knew it, Mom. From the day that girl walked into this family, I knew she’d ruin everything good in it.”
“Barbara, honey, please calm down and tell me what happened.”
“Calm down?”
I stopped and faced her, tears and snot streaking my face.
“You want to know what happened? Ask your husband-the man who couldn’t keep it in his pants around his mistress. Now her daughter is doing the same thing to me.”
My mother’s mouth fell open.
“What are you talking about?”
“Wesley is breaking up with me for Isabella!”
She shot to her feet as if the words had struck her.
“That’s impossible.” She shook her head vigorously. “Wesley is an Alpha. He can’t marry an illegitimate child.”
“Tell that to him.” My voice cracked into a scream. “He’s denying we were ever together. Like I imagined the last two months.”
“What?” Confusion flashed across Mom’s face. “Why would he do that?”
My hands flailed.
“I told you, Mom. Isabella is evil. She must have used something on him. Where’s Dad? We need to march to the Alpha house right now.”
Mom shook her head.
“Honey, we can’t just storm into the Alpha house.”
“Then what do you suggest we do? Sit here and sulk while Isabella takes everything I spent years building?”
She seemed lost, so unlike herself-which was exactly what I wanted.
“Can we invite Wesley over and reason with him?”
I dropped onto the bed, pressing my palms to my eyes. Mom sat beside me and took my hand.
“He’s too far gone, Mom. He won’t listen to anyone. We need to get Isabella out of the pack. Dad just needs to sign off on it.”
Mom fell silent, thinking. I squeezed her hand as she pulled me closer.
“Please, Mom. Isabella has no family ties, which makes her a rogue in the council’s eyes. If we report her, she could be arrested and exiled.”
“Yes, yes,” Mom murmured, still lost in thought.

This pack had never tolerated people without a name behind them, not after everything with the Meridian cult. Anyone unaccounted for was seen as a threat before they were seen as a person.
Mom finally looked at me.
“If we go that route, there’s no need to panic. If Isabella refuses to reveal who she really is, that works in our favor.”
“Are you even listening to yourself, Mom? What if she exposes us and tells Wesley she belongs to this family?
Mom went quiet again, shaking her head.
“Isabella can’t do that,” she said. “If she wanted to, she would have already.”
“You can’t speak for her. She could be waiting for the right moment, and we can’t let that happen.”
“You’re right,” she said. “But we still shouldn’t panic. Imagine if Wesley learned everything about her, especially that she was once an Alpha’s mistress and had his child.”
I lowered my voice.
“An Alpha?”
She nodded, her mouth twisting.
“She’s running from him. He’s searching for her and her son.”
My heart skipped.
This just got interesting.
“Who is he?”
“I don’t know his name, but from what I’ve gathered, he’s the Alpha of her mother’s pack. Isabella’s mother was from Blood Moon Pack.”
Rumors I’d barely noticed before suddenly came rushing back.
“That has to be Alpha Desmond,” I said, almost to myself.
“Yes. That’s his name,” Mom confirmed.
“Oh, Goddess.” I let out a teary laugh. “He’s old enough to be her father. And dangerous.”
“More importantly, I’m almost certain Alpha Cameron and Alpha Desmond don’t see eye to eye. There’s history between them. Some kind of rift.”
Mom’s eyes sharpened.
“Really?”
