Three hundred and twenty-four
Isabella POV
“This feels wrong,” I said as Wesley pulled into the driveway and parked beneath the covered section beside his house.
He didn’t respond until he turned off the engine and took the keys. “What does?” he said, glancing back
at me.
“I feel like I’m walking into a lion’s den. What if your family or someone sees me here?”
“No one is coming here,” he said after a chuckle. “People don’t visit me without telling me first.”
I reached for my door, but Wesley came around and opened it for me, making sure our bodies brushed against each other as I stepped out.
“What about Barbara?” I said.
Whenever I mentioned Barbara, he seemed to have that look, like he was hiding a very funny joke.
“Barbara doesn’t come here. We mostly see each other outside.”
Although that eased some of the tightness in my chest, there was still something weird about their relationship.
“There you go with that frown. Must you overthink everything?” he said, pulling me closer and kissing my forehead.
I sighed, wondering who wouldn’t if they were in my situation.
He took my hand while carrying my bag from the back seat with his other hand.
His house was a one-story white duplex, and from the outside, it looked like the usual house belonging to someone wealthy. But when the lock clicked open and he pushed the entrance door inward, the inside was much more minimalist than I expected.
The walls were white, with cream-colored seats. There was a vintage center table and a wall stand with a few knickknacks, murals, sculptures, and abstract paintings.
He led me through the living room and into the kitchen.
“Grandma Cassidy always makes sure that there’s enough food to last me a whole year, and I end up just giving most of it away,” he said, opening the refrigerator. “You can have whatever you like.”
I gasped. “That’s enough food for the pack.”
He laughed.
“Do you live here alone?”

“Yes, I like my space,” he said.
“So Anita and Emma live together?” I asked.
“Correct,” he said, pulling out a container and setting it on the counter.
“Let me help.”
“No, sit.”
I scoffed and sat on one of the stools while he warmed the food.
“Are you feeling better?” he asked.
I looked down at myself. “Much better. Still a bit dizzy. I just wonder if I messed up Grandma Cassidy’s schedule for the week.”
“Didn’t you say she was elated to see Maverick?”
“Yes, she was, but you don’t just pop up at the beginning of a weekday with a four-year-old.”
“Well, Grandma Cassidy is pretty straightforward. If she didn’t want him around, she would have told you in the best possible way.”
After Wesley had insisted that I take sick leave, which, to his annoyance, I took for three days instead of a week, he had also insisted on driving me to the gate of his parents’ house to drop off Maverick before we came here. Everything seemed to have gone pretty smoothly.
I used the feeling-under-the-weather excuse with Grandma Cassidy, and she suggested several herbs
that I could use.
My eyes roamed around Wesley’s kitchen. Everything had a place here. His house felt lived-in without looking messy. Then I saw a transparent bowl of sweets on the kitchen counter. Small wrapped toffees, hard candies in different shapes, chocolate-covered nuts, and fruit-flavored sweets filled it. I headed
toward it.
“You have a sweet tooth,” I said, picking up a toffee.
He chuckled. “You caught me.”
“It’s just so contradictory for an alpha. Shouldn’t alphas hate anything sweet?”
“I’m beginning to think you have a very strange idea of what an alpha should be.”
“I do. And you’re already failing.”
“I’m sorry to disappoint you.”
I smiled and popped the toffee into my mouth. “Well, I hope you’re not as stereotypical as you were with Harrison.”
His eyebrows lifted. “What did I do to Harrison?”

“You were bullying him.”
“I was defending myself.”
“You were bullying him.”
“He was taking his fake boyfriend role a little too seriously. He was bringing you food and everything. I thought someone needed to remind him that the job wasn’t permanent.”
“A very noble defense.”
He shook his head, still smiling, and spooned some rice onto a plate before filling another with greens
and lettuce.
Though I wasn’t very hungry, being alone with him made me eat.
“Stop looking at me like that,” he said.
I looked up at him. “Like what?”
“Like you’re trying to decide whether to eat the food or me.”
My mouth fell open.
“You don’t have to hide it,” he said. “I want you as much as you want me.”
His words and the way he looked at me made my body warm again.
I almost choked on my water when his hand moved over my thigh. My body betrayed me by not resisting
at all.
It didn’t take long after eating before we were upstairs, tearing at each other’s clothes.
I pushed him onto the bed and climbed over him before he could speak. My knees sank into the
mattress on either side of his hips. I reached down, took him in my hand, and guided him to my entrance.
I sank down in one long slide until he filled me completely. The stretch pulled a sound from my throat. I stayed there for a moment, feeling him pulse inside me, then I started to move.
