Evangeline POV

The immediate aftermath of the blade pulling out was silence, except for my mother’s gasping as she tried to draw a breath through the wound.

Her eyes locked onto mine. Confusion crossed her face. She looked down at the knife buried in her chest. Blood welled around the silver blade, soaking through the white fabric of her robe. Blood spilled from her nose and mouth, dripping onto the forest floor.

Her lips parted.

“Eva…”

The word came out like a wet bubble.

She looked at the knife again, then back at me.

“What have you…”

More blood spilled from her mouth and streaked down her chin. Her knees buckled. She reached toward me, expecting me to catch her.

I didn’t move.

She collapsed onto the forest floor.

I looked at the women surrounding us. They stood frozen.

Then I looked back at my mother.

“What have you done?” one of the women screamed.

“Oh my God! She killed her mother.”

The screams crashed over one another. They pointed at me. One woman clamped both hands over her mouth.

“Stop her!”

“Get the elders. Sound the alarm. Don’t let her escape.”

“Use the knife,” the woman tied to the tree shouted at me. “Put that to yourself.”

Every pair of eyes dropped to the dagger still clenched in my hand. They were the ones who had coated it with poison. None of them stepped forward.

I raised it and slashed the air.

“How dare any of you come near me? I will kill every last one of you.”

No one moved.

One of my mother’s friends looked from her body to me. Her face drained of colour.

I laughed. It didn’t sound like me. My eyes wouldn’t focus. The women stared at me. Nobody wanted to be the one who came closer.

The crowd broke apart in every direction.

I stood there with my mother’s blood still warm on my hands. Her eyes were still open.

My gaze drifted to the woman tied to the tree. She stared back at me, breathing hard, blood streaking her bruised

face.

Why would I even save her?

Part of me wanted to finish the job. She meant nothing to me. I’d killed my own mother. Why not finish what I d been sent here to do?

The knife hung loosely in my hand as I walked toward her. Her body tensed. She squeezed her eyes shut.

“Don’t,” she whispered. “Please don’t do it. I’ll help you.”

I scoffed.

“Help me? What help do you think you can possibly give me? You think my life isn’t already over?”

I held up the bloodied dagger.

“I killed my own mother. You think I did that for nothing?”

She held my gaze.

“Trust me. I can help you get out of this.”

“No one can.”

Her body stiffened when I raised the dagger. She tried to move, but her knees gave way.

Instead of driving the blade into her chest, I slashed through the rope. The hemp fell away.

She stumbled forward and caught herself against the tree.

I caught her arm before she hit the ground.

“We must go,” she said. “With her body. They’re coming for you.

I glanced back.

The clearing had dissolved into chaos. More Meridians were running toward us.

The woman grabbed my wrist and pointed at my mother’s body.

I bent down and lifted her while the woman took as much of the weight as she could.

Blood smeared across our hands and clothes as we dragged my mother to the car.

I opened the boot. I barely remembered unlocking it or lifting her inside.

The engine roared to life as we climbed in. I pulled onto the dirt road.

My breathing filled the car.

I looked down.

My mother’s blood.

I was covered in it.

My hands shook. The steering wheel slipped beneath my fingers.

“I killed her.”

The words barely sounded like mine.

“I killed… I killed my mother.”

I slammed my fist against the steering wheel.

“I killed her.”

The woman beside me stayed silent.

I fumbled for my phone and called Kade.

When he answered, I couldn’t speak.

“I killed her,” I sobbed. “I killed her.”

“Eva, talk to me!” he shouted. “What are you doing? Where are you?”

I couldn’t answer. I couldn’t even remember where I was driving.

The woman took the phone from my hand.

“Don’t ask questions. Track this phone. We’re being tailed.”

She ended the call, looked at me and said, “Drive. They’re coming.

I stared at the road. My hands barely held the wheel.

“Drive!”

I looked in the mirror.

Headlights.

“They’re getting closer!”

I still couldn’t move.

Her hand cracked across my face.

“Drive!”

My foot slammed onto the accelerator and the car lurched forward.

Trees blurred past the windows. I threw the wheel around bends, cutting across roads and forcing the engine harder than I ever had before.

The woman kept looking behind us.

The knife caught my eye. My vision blurred. I swallowed and gripped the wheel tighter.

“There. A petrol station.”

I swerved behind the building where the pumps hid us from the road.

The car stopped.

I threw the door open.

I retched until nothing came up except acid.

My body folded over.

The edges of my vision darkened and the doors slammed.

Someone shouted my name. Hands caught me before I hit the ground.

“Kade.”

He grabbed my shoulders.

Behind him, Cameron stared at me.

Everything went dark.
