One hundred and two
We stayed at the table after the heavy part settled, and the look Sasha kept giving me told me the topic was about to shift to me and Cameron.
“So, how is tall, dark, and emotionally confusing Alpha?”
I rolled my eyes. “We’re not doing this.”
“Oh, we are absolutely doing this You disappeared into some luxury prison with bodyguards. You look like you’ve been kissed recently, and you expect me not to ask questions.”
“I have not been kissed recently.”
Cora wiggled her eyebrows. “That sounded defensive.”
“It wasn’t. It’s the truth. And you two should stop ganging up on me.”
Sasha smirked. “Even a blind person can see that Cameron likes you. It’s just going to take a matter of time before everything blows up.”
I grabbed my cup to give my hands something to do. “He is Evangeline’s mate. That’s the reality. I’m only their surrogate. I’m the hired womb. That’s all this is.”
Cora tilted her head. “Hmm. Keep telling yourself that.”
Sasha laughed and turned to her. “The first day we met, his eyes didn’t leave her.”
“You’re always exaggerating.” I pointed my spoon at her. “Cameron is not going to risk scandal over some attraction.”
Cora shook her head. “I think he’s in love with you. I haven’t seen much, but every time I saw you together, it was obvious. And even if he isn’t fully there yet, he’s heading there.”
I shook my head. “He has a mate,” I repeated.
Sasha laughed. “People try lots of things. Doesn’t mean their hearts cooperate.
“I told you he’s trying to fix things with Evangeline.”
“True,” Cora said. “And nobody would blame Lisa for having feelings. That man is hot.”
Sasha’s head snapped toward her, and I started laughing.
“I don’t want him,” Cora said. “I’m saying I have eyes.”
Then she looked at me. “I know the contract says things would end after the baby. What if it doesn’t?”
I didn’t answer because I had nothing to say.
The house felt different without my mom. Quieter in a way that pressed against my ears. Guards were everywhere, and someone came daily to cook and clean. They left at the end of the day.
The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen, the only steady sound in the house.
I walked through the living room, staring at the clock ticking on the wall. It was 7 p.m., and I could hear the faint sound of guards talking outside through the glass.
