Shredded Vows: The Billionaire’s Secret Heir novel Chapter 37

"Since there's traffic ahead, I suppose I can make do here for the night." Gideon sounded incredibly reluctant.

Larson smoothly spun the steering wheel, pulling the car into the villa's driveway. "Sir, you are not a man who 'makes do.' If you wanted to come home, why be so stubborn about it?"

"Are you trying to lose your year-end bonus?" The car rolled to a halt. Gideon picked up his suit jacket from the seat next to him and opened the door himself.

"Money is just money. I genuinely just want to see you live a good life!" Larson had served the Gray family for nearly thirty years; he was practically an elder.

Stepping out, Gideon turned around, resting a hand on the roof of the car. He looked at the middle-aged driver stepping out of the front and asked, "Uncle Larson, what exactly constitutes a good life?"

Larson replied with earnest weight, "A loving wife, kids, and a warm hearth."

"..." Gideon let out a dry laugh, waved him off, and strode toward the living room.

His feelings for Lydia were a constant, agonizing paradox.

Love and hatred twisted together like choking vines, strangling his rationality. He would miss her if he didn't see her for a few days, but the moment they were in the same room, he couldn't stop himself from tearing her down.

Seeing Gideon walk in, Mrs. Gable practically launched herself off the sofa in shock. "Sir? Why... why are you back so late?"

"Why are you still awake?" Hanging up his jacket, he glanced around. "Is Lydia still up too? What is she doing in the study?" He started toward the stairs to find out.

Panic flashing across her face, Mrs. Gable threw herself into his path. "Please, sir, wait! Don't go up there!"

"Why not?" He slipped his hands into his pockets. "Is she hiding a man?"

"No, no, absolutely not!!" Mrs. Gable panicked, waving her hands frantically. She couldn't articulate exactly what was happening, but out of concern for his safety, she refused to budge.

Gideon was suddenly wide awake. This was getting interesting.

"If you're going to block my way, you need to give me a reason."

"Today... today Mrs. Gray received a package. A very mysterious box. She carried it upstairs around five this evening and said... said under no circumstances was she to be disturbed. She hasn't even eaten dinner yet."

Gideon frowned. "And you decided I don't qualify as an exception?"

"No, no, no, you are the absolute priority!" Mrs. Gable's brain was practically short-circuiting. "I'm just worried... I'm really worried..."
