Catherine Gray sat on the living room sofa, draped in a heavy mink coat, sipping tea as she waited.
When Lydia stepped into the foyer, Catherine looked up. Her brow was knitted in a fierce scowl, the steam from her porcelain cup spiraling into the air between them.
"Mrs. Gray..." the maids greeted Lydia in hushed, nervous whispers.
Lydia walked over to the coffee table and dropped the divorce papers onto the glass. "Catherine, I can't even get your son in the same room as me. There's no way I can get these signed."
"Are you doing this on purpose, Lydia?!" The older woman slammed her teacup down, glaring viciously at the documents. "I gave you one week. It's been almost ten days! You work at Gray Enterprises, don't tell me you can't manage to run into him!"
Lydia stood her ground, maintaining unwavering eye contact with her mother-in-law. "My mother lost her job today. Was that your doing?"
"I made my terms very clear! I gave you a week!" Catherine stood up, her lip curling in disgust. "You brought this on yourself. You're too useless to give him a child, and too pathetic to secure a divorce! You have no one to blame but yourself!"
Lydia was floored, blinding rage erupting in her chest. "Going after my mother? Is that how low you'll sink?"
"Insolent brat! How dare you speak to me like that!" Catherine shrieked, her face turning purple with fury.
Just then, a black Bentley slowed down and turned into the grand driveway.
Larson spotted the two cars parked out front immediately. Initially, he'd been thrilled that Gideon was finally returning home after all these days, but now, his stomach dropped. A massive storm was brewing inside.
"Gideon... sir, your mother is here. And your wife has returned," Larson warned quietly from the driver's seat.
Sitting in the back, analyzing financial reports, Gideon glanced out the window at the two vehicles parked side by side.
Inside the lavishly decorated living room, Catherine snatched the divorce papers off the table and hurled them directly at Lydia's chest. "I'll give you one last chance! If these aren't signed in three days, your mother is going to lose a lot more than just her job!"
Lydia caught the papers, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the thick stack of paper. "What are you going to do? Put a hit out on her in broad daylight?"
