It was true—talking to someone you deeply disliked was a genuinely miserable experience.
The insane part was that they had already signed the divorce papers. She had already asked Conrad to expedite the legal processing. Yet this man still had the audacity to think she was just "throwing a tantrum" and thought he could issue orders like she was his subordinate.
"Are you out of your mind?" Hulda arched an eyebrow, her eyes freezing over as she stared him down. The pure, unfiltered impatience radiating from her face was a flawless mirror of the look Herbert used to give her.
Herbert's pupils contracted sharply. In all their years together, he had never seen her look at him with such open disgust. "I am your husband. I am the father of your child. What right do you think I have?"
She opened her mouth to remind him that he wouldn't be her husband for much longer, but before the words could leave her lips, the hospital door slammed open.
Cora Jewell burst into the room like a maniac, locking eyes with Hulda and lunging straight for her.
Before anyone could react, Cora's hands clamped violently onto the collar of Hulda's shirt. "Hulda! You useless garbage! How the hell were you watching him?! Why is he in the hospital?!"
Herbert reacted instantly, tearing Cora's hands away and violently hauling her back. "Cora, what is wrong with you?!"
Cora ignored her brother entirely, glaring at Hulda with venomous hatred. "Do you even know how to be a mother?! If you can't do it, then get the hell out! God, I regret ever letting you be his mother!"
Hulda's eyes narrowed dangerously. "What did you just say?"
"Cora, shut your mouth!" Valery snapped, instantly abandoning her own outrage to yank the hysterical girl backward. "Are you crazy?! We're in a hospital!"
"Hospital... hospital!" Cora finally snapped out of her blind rage. She spun toward the bed. "Miles! My poor baby!"
Shaking off Valery's grip, Cora threw herself at the bedside. Seeing the little boy's pale, pained face, tears began streaming down her cheeks.
Right at that moment, Miles opened his eyes.
Seeing him stir, everyone instantly crowded around the bed. Cora had claimed the closest spot. "Miles, you're awake! Does anything hurt? Let Aunt Cora see... oh, my poor sweet baby..."
