"Good." Hulda nodded, turning her attention to Brandon. "Dr. Lowe, this project needs to be suspended immediately. It cannot move forward, or it will cause a catastrophic failure."
The room erupted in chaos.
Ursula slammed her hands on the table and shot up from her chair. "What the hell do you mean? Suspend my project? The sheer arrogance! Not even Dr. Lowe would dare say that to me. Who gave a nepo-hire like you the nerve?"
The researchers exchanged stunned whispers. No one could have imagined this new director would be bold enough to target Ursula's work on her very first day.
The woman was the backbone of their research department, unmatched in both seniority and sheer capability.
Even Brandon had to tolerate her awful personality for the sake of the institute, limiting himself to the occasional scolding. Halting her project was completely unprecedented.
Though many people disliked Ursula's attitude, their disdain for Hulda easily eclipsed it.
At least Ursula had the brains to back up her ego.
Hulda was young, untested, and parachuted into a senior role. Instead of trying to build relationships with the team, she was immediately playing toxic office politics by taking out the highest performer.
Out of their sheer dislike for her, the way the staff looked at Brandon began to change as well.
Brandon could feel the palpable resistance radiating from the room toward both Hulda and himself. He frowned slightly—not in anger at Hulda, but because he knew she would never make a move like this without solid proof.
If she was choosing to publicly halt the operation, she had found a fatal flaw.
"Director Atherton, did you discover an error?" he asked in a low, serious voice.
