She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 72

He had rushed over, pushing aside his own work the moment he received Hulda's call.

Over the phone, he had asked her what was going on and why she was calling a sudden meeting.

She simply stated that the matter was extremely serious—too complicated to explain briefly—but it was imperative he was there.

Given that, and considering this was her first meeting since taking office, he absolutely had to show his support. More importantly, he knew Hulda. She never did anything without a very good reason.

Yet the first thing he heard upon walking in was Ursula's complaining. "Dr. Lowe, we all get that she wants to make a strong impression on her first day. But she can flex her authority on her own time; there's no need to drag us into this when everyone is slammed."

Ursula's words instantly stoked the flames of irritation in the room. Not everyone was bold enough to voice their frustration publicly like she did, but internally, they had already written off their newly appointed director.

Even Harvey, who was usually the resident peacemaker, just sat there in silence, making no attempt to smooth things over.

Taking his seat, Brandon frowned at the remark. "If Director Atherton called a meeting, it must be for something important. We just need to cooperate."

Ursula smirked. "You're awfully protective of her, Dr. Lowe. When are you going to show me that kind of favoritism?"

"Ms. Delaney, watch your tone! Mind your professionalism and remember where you are. Do I really need to teach you basic workplace etiquette?" It wasn't that Brandon hadn't heard the gossip circulating among the staff. But they were completely baseless rumors, never spoken to his face. He was too busy to waste energy on high school drama.

He just hadn't expected her to be so brazen as to cross the line in front of the entire R&D department.

As a man and the Deputy Director, the rumors didn't really damage him.

But Hulda was young and newly hired. If these malicious whispers were allowed to spread, they could severely derail her career here.

As one of the institute's top researchers, Ursula had once been the favored candidate for the director position. Being publicly dressed down by Brandon was a massive blow to her ego. Her face darkened with fury, though she wisely chose to drop the subject.

Still, she had achieved exactly what she wanted.
