Everett waited outside The Quixote Brasserie as evening fell and the city lights flickered to life. He wore a crisp, tailored white suit—not outrageously expensive, but certainly a splurge. It was pristine, the kind of garment he usually saved from the daily grind of the office out of sheer practicality. But tonight was different. Tonight was special.
For the first time ever, Melanie Royce had asked him out to dinner.
When she'd called, his response had been painfully muted, bordering on robotic. It wasn't that he hadn't wanted to go—quite the opposite.
He had just been so stunned that it took a full minute after hanging up for his heart to finally start hammering against his ribs.
He had spent an entire hour tearing his closet apart before settling on the white suit, hoping it would give him an edge of sophistication.
As he stood nervously by the entrance, he spotted a figure approaching in the distance.
At first, he assumed it was Melanie.
She was too far away to make out any features.
But she wore a sophisticated, muted gray two-piece set and black strappy heels, her hair pinned up elegantly. The silhouette was slender, graceful, and radiated a quiet, intelligent beauty.
Naturally, his mind jumped to the conclusion that this woman must be Melanie.
Even if she looked a bit taller and leaner than he remembered.
As the distance closed, Everett finally saw her face.
"Daphne?" he gasped, his eyes widening in shock.
Daphne Morrell wasn't surprised by his reaction. Even she felt entirely unlike herself in this outfit. It was only natural that Everett was left utterly speechless.
"Listen to me, Daphne. People are visual creatures, especially men. You need to dress to kill tonight. Make Everett do a double-take."
Melanie had instructed her firmly before they parted ways.
Daphne had taken those words to heart.
