The sensory memories hit her with overwhelming force, and her face flushed crimson. She touched her burning cheeks, then pressed a hand to her racing heart, her mind spiraling into chaos. Was she actually reminiscing about her hookup with Everett?
"Did I accidentally ingest something downstairs?" she muttered, shivering as she wrapped her arms around herself. She refused to believe she was actually catching feelings for him. There had to be a physiological explanation.
She rushed into the bathroom and splashed freezing water on her face, forcing herself to snap out of it.
"He's in love with Melanie. You know this," she whispered to her reflection, water dripping from her chin. She had explicitly told him to forget about that night. If it never happened, why was she obsessing over it? "Pull yourself together, Daphne. Men don't even see you as a woman anyway. Stop being so pathetic."
Meanwhile, at the Royce Group.
By the time Melanie arrived at the office, the workday was nearly over. She hadn't meant to fall asleep at Preston's place. The exhaustion from her business trip had simply caught up with her, and she felt entirely too safe around him. Not that she needed to be on guard. Preston adored her, but he would never take advantage of her. Back when he was just her tenant, he had never once crossed the line.
As her assistant, Preston naturally accompanied her into the building. The moment Melanie stepped through the doors, she noticed the strange looks directed her way. Groups of employees were huddled together, whispering and pointing at them with poorly concealed excitement.
Frowning, Melanie turned to Preston. "Is there something on my face?" She inspected him as well. He looked as immaculate as ever.
Preston stayed quiet for a moment, his dark eyes gleaming with quiet amusement. He had a pretty good idea what was going on.
"Ms. Royce," the receptionist called out.
Melanie walked over to the desk. "Yes?"
"VP Hale from Lockridge Health & Wellness came looking for you earlier today."
