Melanie stumbled back, startled.
It took her a moment to recognize the wild-eyed man standing in front of her. It was Dominic Hale.
She couldn't be blamed for not recognizing him immediately.
Ever since the Hale Group had gone bankrupt and been absorbed by the Royce Group, he had completely vanished from her radar.
He was a closed chapter, utterly irrelevant to her life.
But more than that...
The Dominic standing before her was a physical wreck.
Clearly suffering from days of heavy drinking, his face was bloated, his eyes were sunken with dark circles, and a rough scruff covered his jaw. His clothes were rumpled and stained.
He looked like he had been sleeping on the streets for days.
Melanie tried to step around him, but Dominic deliberately moved to block her.
If it weren't for the gaudy bouquet of red roses clutched in his hands, she would have assumed he was here to beg for cash.
"Melanie..." he rasped, lifting his head. His voice cracked with emotion.
Before she could process what was happening, Dominic lurched forward, practically collapsing in front of her as he held the flowers up like a lifeline.
Melanie's eyes widened in shock.
He pushed the bouquet toward her.
"I finally understand... After all these years, the only person I've ever truly loved is you, Melanie."
Tears streamed down his bloodshot eyes.
Melanie just scoffed in utter disbelief.
It didn't fit his usual arrogant demeanor.
"Melanie, I was wrong... I had it all wrong," he gasped, fighting for air as if he were suffocating.
He was practically hyperventilating, struggling to force the words out.
"I was wrong, I was so horribly wrong... It was a lie! From the very beginning, Evelyn played me for a fool... She never saved my life. She only pretended to suck the venom out after the real danger had passed..."
"The person who actually saved me... The one who really kept me alive..."
He stared at her, his red-rimmed eyes wide with a terrifying intensity.
"It was you... It was always you, Melanie."
His voice broke into a messy sob.
He never could have imagined that the childhood savior he had idolized and searched for was standing right in front of him all along.
