When Eartha finally regained consciousness, six hours had passed. She found herself lying in an ICU bed, hooked up to an array of monitors and tubes.
The lingering anesthesia dulled her senses, leaving her body numb and her mind sluggish.
Her vision slowly swam into focus, revealing a doctor in scrubs standing next to Lizetta at her bedside.
Seeing her eyes open, the doctor asked a few basic questions, instructing Eartha to nod or shake her head.
Once satisfied, the doctor offered a reassuring smile.
"The surgery was a success. Just rest and cooperate with the treatment."
A surge of triumphant relief washed over Eartha. The doctor then turned to Lizetta.
"Ms. Madden, we'll keep her under observation for a day. If there are no severe signs of rejection and her vitals remain stable, we'll transfer her to a regular ward."
Lizetta nodded. "Thank you for your hard work."
The doctor smiled and left the room. The moment the door shut, Lizetta stepped forward, leaning directly over Eartha. Her voice was ice.
"I upheld my end of the bargain. I got you a new kidney and a second chance at life. A life for a life. If you won't hand Joy over right now, then you're going to video call your people and show me that my son is safe."
Eartha was still breathing through an oxygen mask. Without a second thought, Lizetta reached down and ripped it off her face.
Eartha gasped, her eyes flying wide in shock. She strained to force the words out.
"Im... impossible..."
Lizetta nodded slowly, a dark smirk pulling at her lips.
She desperately wanted to scream, but all that came out were ragged, pathetic wheezes. Fresh out of a grueling operation, her body was completely broken and defenseless.
Lizetta's smile turned feral. "Scared now? Then do as I say. I just want to lay eyes on him. I just need to know he's alive. One video call changes nothing. What are you so terrified of? You're stuck in this bed for another week anyway. I am out of patience, Eartha. I am not waiting another second."
She didn't stop pulling the IV line as she spoke.
Cold sweat beaded on Eartha's forehead. She gritted her teeth.
"Your son... is in my hands! You wouldn't dare!"
With a violent yank, Lizetta tore the needle clean out of her arm. She dangled the dripping needle right in front of Eartha's face, laughing coldly.
"Try me. People die from severe organ rejection in the ICU all the time. Why shouldn't you be a statistic? If you die here, do you really think your lackeys will care enough to avenge you? They'd just assume your body rejected the organ. That's life. Tell me, do you honestly think they'd kill Joy to avenge you, or do you think they'd pivot and ransom him to us for cash? I'm betting on the money. So, whether you live or die doesn't actually stop me from getting my son back. Hell, it might even be easier if you're dead..."

The readers' comments on the novel: Shattered Illusions Love Lies and Redemption (Lizetta and Remington)
Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
