Shattered Illusions Love Lies and Redemption (Lizetta and Remington) novel Chapter 1235

She hastily yanked the folded blankets over herself and stared up at the doctor.

"Doctor, what kind of medication did you just inject me with?"

She assumed that since she had been beaten unconscious and her kidneys were failing, she had been brought to the infirmary for medical treatment.

After all, if she died, the police station would be in deep trouble.

But instead of reassuring her, the doctor merely offered a slight, mocking twitch of his lips.

"A bit late to start asking questions now, don't you think?"

The smile was laced with pure malice and sarcasm. Eartha's eyes widened in sheer terror.

"What did you put in me?! Help! Somebody help! Murder! You can't leave!"

Eartha lunged and grabbed the doctor's coat as he turned to leave, but no one burst into the room to save her.

The doctor didn't panic in the slightest. Instead, he violently yanked his arm free with utter disdain.

The force of the movement dragged Eartha right off the narrow hospital bed, sending her crashing to the floor.

Her vision swam with dark spots. She struggled to lift her head, meeting the doctor's freezing gaze.

"Do you feel your kidneys working a bit harder? Failing a little faster? The only way to save yourself, Eartha, is true remorse and making amends."

With those parting words, the doctor turned and walked out.

"You can't go! Don't leave! Save me..."

Whether it was the actual drug taking effect or purely psychological terror, Eartha couldn't tell.

A wave of severe nausea hit her, and her loss of bodily control worsened. Black patches crowded her vision, the room spun violently, and she couldn't catch her breath.

She felt as though she were on the brink of death. Pure survival instinct drove her to drag herself toward the door.

But before she could even reach the threshold, she plunged back into darkness.

"Mr. Dashiell, Chief Zhang. She passed out again."

He got into the car, leaned his head back against the seat, and closed his eyes.

The driver accompanying him tonight wasn't Ray, but a younger bodyguard named Joey.

Since Remington didn't speak, Joey didn't dare utter a word to ask questions.

The interior of the car was dead silent until, suddenly, a low laugh—straddling the line between profound grief and absolute elation—echoed through the space.

Joey nearly jumped out of his skin and quickly darted a glance into the rearview mirror.

To his utter shock, his boss, a man who famously never showed a shred of emotion, had his eyes wide open. His eyes were completely red, shimmering with a distinct layer of moisture.

Joey's heart skipped a beat, suddenly terrified for his own life.

Had he just... seen his boss cry?

Terrified, Joey immediately snapped his head forward, waiting in trembling silence for the ax to fall. But no scolding ever came from the backseat.
