Eartha's words were sickening to hear.
Although Nelson's face remained impassive, his heart was undoubtedly heavy with regret and pain.
Lizetta didn't want him to sit through any more of this lunatic's ranting.
Nelson had come to find out if Bernice's condition was tied to Eartha.
Now that he had his answer, he had no interest in staying. Exhausted, he had been running on sheer willpower.
Knowing Lizetta was worried about him, he didn't refuse her kindness. He stood up and let Jerome escort him out.
Eartha clutched her chest, her face pale and dripping with cold sweat from the pain.
She looked up at Nelson's retreating figure, her eyes growing unexpectedly warm.
While Archibald and Miriam had only raised her as a bargaining chip for their own gain...
...Nelson and Bernice had shown her genuine kindness. She had truly felt their warmth and love.
Unfortunately, she was never their real daughter.
Their kindness had only fueled her wild ambitions and greed.
Eartha parted her lips, knowing this might be the last time she ever saw the old man.
She wanted to say something, but ultimately found she had no words.
Her view was suddenly blocked as Lizetta took two steps forward, glaring down at her with absolute contempt. Eartha swallowed back her fleeting guilt, coughing violently as she pushed herself up from the floor.
Because she had overheard the nurses pitying the pregnant woman in bed eighteen.
The woman was heavily pregnant and had nearly died in labor because of domestic violence. After dropping her off at the hospital, her husband vanished and never came back.
Driven by jealousy, Eartha wanted Elsa's daughter to taste the horror of an abusive home.
But when she put little Liz into the crib, the baby suddenly opened her eyes, looking up at her with pure innocence.
In that fleeting moment of pity, she swapped Lizetta again, this time with Evelina.
Lizetta sneered at Eartha's hypocritical excuse.
"My mother was so good to you. If it wasn't for her, you might have died at the hands of your ex-husband. She saved you and treated you like a sister. And in return, you stole her only daughter. Did you really swap me to the Hawthornes out of pity? Ha! You just figured a double swap would add an extra layer of protection, making it harder for anyone to trace it back to you!"

The readers' comments on the novel: Shattered Illusions Love Lies and Redemption (Lizetta and Remington)
Does evil really triumph always above the good in this novel ? How comes Stella's evilness has no end? Does the author believes that by giving justice and importance to bad people like Stella will make this novel interesring? I am starting to lose my patience and ask when will the writer finally will realize that the protagonist is Lizetta and not Stella....
