Damon pov
The attack came at dawn, exactly as I'd feared it might, the northern border erupting into chaos before the sun had fully cleared the horizon.
I'd insisted on positioning myself among the front lines despite Callum's protests, understanding the genuine significance of what we were defending, and when the alarm horns sounded, I was already moving, my wolf surging forward with immediate, violent readiness even before I'd fully processed the scale of what was actually approaching.
Damian's forces came in considerably greater numbers than his initial appearance had suggested—perhaps thirty warriors now, shifted and snarling as they crossed the border line with genuine, coordinated aggression, understanding immediately this represented exactly the significant conflict we'd been preparing for these past several tense days.
Our own warriors met them with equal ferocity, the border erupting into violent, chaotic combat, snarls and the sounds of genuine struggle filling the early morning air.
I caught sight of Miriam among the chaos, and felt immediate, sharp alarm crash through me—she'd insisted on helping defend the territory that had offered her family sanctuary, positioned near the rear of our formation, though clearly determined to contribute despite her own exhaustion and lack of formal combat training.
"Get back," I tried to shout toward her, though my voice emerged as more growl than actual words given my already-shifted state, watching helplessly as she engaged one of Damian's warriors directly, her own desperate courage clearly outweighing her actual combat capability.
The warrior struck her hard, and I watched her go down, collapsing against the frozen ground with obvious, immediate pain, her attacker moving to press whatever advantage that fall had provided.
Something in me shattered entirely at that sight.
My wolf took over completely, every conscious thought subsumed beneath pure, violent protective fury, and I moved faster than I'd ever managed before, closing the distance toward Miriam's fallen form with singular, absolute focus.
I reached her attacker just as he moved to finish whatever violence he'd intended, my wolf's full weight and fury crashing into him with devastating force, and I felt the fight leave his body almost immediately, my instincts driving me to subdue rather than kill despite the raw, savage fury still coursing through my system.
