Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 189

Damon pov

I found Miriam in the guest quarters we'd arranged for her family, sitting near the window watching her grandchildren finally sleep peacefully after their extensive medical evaluations, and something in her posture shifted the moment she saw my expression, understanding immediately that whatever news I carried wasn't going to be simple.

"The faction found us," she said, not quite a question, exhaustion evident in every line of her weathered face.

"They did," I confirmed, settling into the chair across from her. "At our northern border, demanding we hand you over. I refused, but their leader made it clear this isn't finished."

She closed her eyes briefly, something between grief and resigned exhaustion crossing her expression. "I was hoping we'd have more time before they actually located us."

"I need the whole truth," I said, keeping my voice firm despite genuine sympathy for her obvious exhaustion. "Everything about why you're actually being hunted, Miriam. Not simply the general account you provided initially, but complete, specific details. If I'm going to defend this territory against whatever force they're apparently gathering, I need to understand exactly what we're actually facing."

She was quiet for a long moment, and I watched her gather herself, understanding this conversation required considerable, difficult vulnerability on her part.

"Tell me everything," I ordered, gently but firmly. "I can't properly protect your people, or my own, without complete understanding."

She nodded slowly, and began.

"My previous pack's Alpha died six months ago," she said. "Natural causes, nothing suspicious, though what followed proved considerably more sinister. Succession should have passed to his eldest daughter, Kira—capable, respected, genuinely prepared for leadership. But another candidate emerged, Damian, the man you spoke with at the border. He claimed formal challenge rights, contested the succession through what he insisted were legitimate pack traditions."

"And the council allowed this challenge," I asked, understanding the significance of formal process being invoked despite whatever violence had apparently followed.

"Initially, yes," Miriam confirmed. "Though it quickly became evident Damian had no genuine interest in fair, formal succession. He began systematically eliminating anyone who publicly supported Kira's claim, framing it as necessary elimination of dangerous dissent against legitimate authority."
