"What do we know," I asked Callum quietly, taking in the scene with careful, assessing attention.
"They've been remarkably patient," Callum said, his voice tight with cautious professionalism. "No aggressive movement, simply waiting since border patrol first spotted them at dawn. Their apparent leader keeps insisting she needs to speak with you directly."
"She," I repeated, something in that detail catching my attention.
"Yes," Callum confirmed. "Older woman, seems to be leading the group with genuine authority despite their rogue status."
I studied the group carefully from a distance, understanding the genuine importance of approaching this situation with appropriate caution given everything we'd already survived, before finally moving forward, Callum matching my pace, additional warriors positioned carefully behind us.
The woman leading the group stepped forward as we approached, her expression carrying weathered, genuine seriousness rather than any obvious hostility.
"Alpha-elect Cross," she said, her voice carrying rough but steady authority. "Thank you for actually coming to speak with us directly."
"What brings you to our territory," I asked carefully, maintaining appropriate distance and wariness despite her apparent lack of aggression.
"We're seeking sanctuary," she said, something genuine and weary in her voice. "Our previous territory became untenable—internal conflict, dangerous leadership, circumstances that made remaining genuinely unsafe for the families we're responsible for protecting."
I processed that, understanding the genuine complexity of what she was requesting. "That's a significant request. Sanctuary typically requires considerable formal process, verification of your genuine circumstances."
"I understand," she said. "We're prepared to actually cooperate with whatever verification process you require. We simply need somewhere safe, Alpha-elect. We've been traveling for weeks now, avoiding hostile territories, trying to find somewhere that might actually offer the safety our people genuinely need."
I studied her carefully, understanding the genuine weight of her request, and found myself thinking about everything our family had already survived, everything we understood now about genuine danger and desperate need for safety.
"How many people are you actually responsible for," I asked.
