Chapter 144
“I don’t like it either,” I admitted. “But I don’t see a genuinely safer alternative, not if we want to actually resolve this permanently rather than continuing this exhausting cycle of escalating threats indefinitely.”
We continued working through the details, and I found myself, despite genuine reluctance, gradually accepting that some version of this confrontation might actually represent our best available path toward finally ending Genevieve’s reign of terror over my family.
My father emerged from his room partway through our strategizing, having apparently heard enough of our tense, urgent conversation to understand something significant was unfolding.
“What’s happening,” he asked, settling carefully into the remaining chair.
I hesitated only briefly before deciding, again, that honesty mattered more than temporarily protecting him from difficult truth.
“Genevieve wants to meet tonight,” I said. “She’s specifically demanding I bring you.”
His expression tightened immediately, genuine fear crossing his features despite his obvious effort at composure. “That sounds like a trap.”
“We think so too,” I confirmed. “Callum’s helping me strategize how we might actually use this to our advantage, rather than simply refusing or blindly complying.”
“I’ll go,” my father said immediately, without hesitation.
“Dad.” My voice carried immediate alarm. “Your heart genuinely can’t sustain this kind of acute stress right now. The healers were explicit about that.”
“I understand the risk,” he said, something steady and determined in his voice despite his obvious continued physical vulnerability. “But Damon, if this genuinely represents our best chance at finally, permanently ending this threat, I’m not going to let fear for my own survival prevent that resolution. This has already cost this family too much your mother’s continued fear, Evelyn’s pregnancy complicated by constant stress, everyone’s genuine safety perpetually threatened. If my presence tonight might actually help end that, I need to be there.”
“Robert.” Evelyn’s voice carried genuine concern. “This isn’t just about strategic necessity. This is about your actual survival.”
“I know,” he said quietly, meeting her eyes with something resolved and sincere. “But I also promised your mother I’d fight to stay, Damon. Fighting doesn’t mean simply avoiding every risk indefinitely. Sometimes it means facing genuine danger directly, with proper support and preparation, in order to actually protect the people I love.”
I sat with that, understanding the complicated weight of what he was actually saying, torn between genuine fear for his safety and reluctant recognition that his willingness to face this risk, despite everything, represented exactly the kind of courage and commitment he’d been genuinely demonstrating these past several weeks.
“If we do this,” I said finally, “we do it with maximum possible precaution. Extensive hidden security, medical support positioned immediately nearby, careful contingency plans for every possible way this could go wrong.”
“Agreed,” Callum said immediately.
“And you tell Mom,” I added, looking at my father directly. “She deserves to know exactly what you’re planning, rather than simply discovering it after the fact.”
He nodded, something grave but resolved in his expression. “I’ll tell her tonight, before we actually leave for the

meeting.”
We spent the remainder of the afternoon and evening working through increasingly detailed logistics-exact positioning for hidden warriors, medical personnel briefed and ready, careful communication protocols, contingency plans for multiple possible scenarios depending on how Genevieve’s actual intentions unfolded.
My mother arrived that evening, and I watched my father explain everything to her, watched her face carrying genuine fear and reluctant understanding as he articulated his determination to actually proceed despite the obvious risk.
“I don’t want you doing this,” she said quietly, once he’d finished. “I can’t lose you now, Robert. Not after everything we’re finally rebuilding.”
“I know,” he said gently, taking her hands. “But I also can’t continue living under this constant threat indefinitely, watching everyone I love perpetually endangered by her escalating instability. If there’s genuine chance tonight might actually end this, I need to take it, however frightening the risk.”
