Chapter 120
“And?” my father prompted.
“Nothing definitive yet,” Callum admitted. “But there’s one name that stands out-Miriam, one of the junior healers who’s been rotating through your recovery care, Robert. Records show she and Genevieve attended the same pack functions repeatedly over the years, closer proximity than most of the other staff.”
“You think she’s the leak,” I said, anger sharpening immediately at the possibility.
“I think it’s worth investigating directly,” Callum said carefully. “I don’t want to accuse her without actual evidence, but given the pattern of access and connection, she deserves closer scrutiny.”
“Bring her in,” I said immediately. “I want to speak with her myself.”
“Damon,” my father said, a note of caution in his voice. “If she is involved, however unwittingly, we need to handle this carefully. If we spook her before we understand exactly what she might know or have shared, we risk losing whatever information she could actually provide.”
I forced myself to consider that, understanding the wisdom despite my own urgent, protective fury still simmering close to the surface. “Fine. But I want to be present for whatever questioning happens, even if I’m not the one directly conducting it.”
“That’s reasonable,” Callum agreed. “I’ll arrange for her to come in this afternoon, before the emergency council session.”
My mother shifted Willow slightly, who had begun fussing quietly, and I watched her rise, moving toward the small kitchen to prepare a bottle, her steady, practiced care offering some small measure of calm amid the tension still filling the room.
“What about increased protection in the meantime,” I asked, turning back to my father and Callum. “Beyond what we already have in place.”
“I’ve already requested additional resources from pack security,” Callum said. “Doubling the guard presence here, at the medical wing, and I’d recommend considering relocating Evelyn temporarily, somewhere even more secure until we’ve fully resolved this.”
“Where,” I asked. “We’ve already discussed that possibility, but I don’t know where would actually be more secure than here, given how thoroughly Genevieve seems capable of gathering information regardless of location. ”
“There’s a secured guest wing near the council chambers,” my father said thoughtfully. “Heavier security presence generally, closer proximity to formal pack authority. It might offer additional protection beyond what we can provide here.”
“I’m sure,” she said firmly. “Whatever inconvenience or disruption it represents, it’s worth it if it means genuine, additional security while this situation actually resolves.”
I nodded, grateful for her clear, decisive input, and turned back to my father and Callum. “We’ll relocate today, as soon as arrangements can be made.”
“I’ll handle it immediately,” Callum said, already standing, already moving toward the door with renewed urgency.
My father remained a while longer, continuing to coordinate with pack security, with council members ahead of the emergency session, his focused, determined energy a welcome contrast to the exhausted uncertainty that had characterized much of the previous night.
Watching him work, watching my mother continue soothing Willow with practiced, gentle care, watching Evelyn beside me, one hand resting protectively against her still-flat stomach despite the fear still evident in her expression, I understood that whatever genuine danger Genevieve continued to represent, we were facing it now as a genuinely unified family-resources, authority, and fierce protective determination all working together toward the same singular goal.
*Protect them,* my wolf urged, quieter now beneath the concrete, decisive action already underway, though the underlying urgency remained present regardless. *Whatever it takes, protect them all.*
I intended to do exactly that, understanding that today’s emergency council session, today’s careful investigation into the potential leak, today’s relocation to more secure quarters, all represented genuine, meaningful steps toward finally, permanently resolving the threat that had shadowed our family for these past several increasingly frightening weeks.
