Chapter 115
Damon pov
I sat with Evelyn on the couch, Willow now settled contentedly on a blanket nearby, and pulled out my phone to text my parents, unable to fully contain the swelling excitement beneath the layer of genuine worry still present in my chest.
*Need you both to come by when you can. Good news, but we also need to talk security. Nothing urgent- urgent, just important.*
My mother responded almost immediately. *On our way. Is everyone alright?*
*Everyone’s fine,* I typed back. *Promise.*
I set the phone aside and turned my full attention back to Evelyn, who remained curled against me, occasional tears still slipping free even as some of the earlier shock settled into something quieter, more contemplative.
“Hey,” I said softly, pulling her closer, feeling her tremble slightly against me. “Talk to me. What’s going through your head right now?”
“Everything,” she admitted, her voice thick. “The joy, the fear, trying to figure out how we actually protect a pregnancy in the middle of everything happening with Genevieve. It’s a lot, Damon.”
“I know,” I said, and felt something low and instinctive rumble through my chest-a purr, involuntary and immediate, my wolf’s response to her distress overriding any conscious decision on my part.
Evelyn glanced up at the sound, something surprised but comforted crossing her tearful expression. You’re purring.”
“I didn’t even realize I was doing it,” I admitted, though I understood exactly why-my wolf responding instinctively to her fear, some deep, protective urge to soothe and calm rather than let her distress continue unchecked.
*Calm her,* my wolf urged, insistent beneath the surface. *Protect her. Destroy whatever threatens her peace.*
The dual instinct pulled at me sharply-the immediate, tender need to comfort Evelyn balanced against the fierce, protective fury still simmering beneath it, directed entirely at Genevieve and whatever genuine danger she continued to represent.
“I want to hunt down every possible way she could still reach you,” I said, my voice hardening slightly despite my continued effort to remain calm and steady for Evelyn’s sake. “I want to eliminate every single vulnerability in our security, every possible angle she might exploit, until there’s genuinely nothing left for her to threaten.”
“We’re having another baby,” I said, watching understanding dawn across both their faces, my mother’s expression shifting immediately into genuine, overwhelming joy.
“Oh, Evelyn.” My mother crossed the room quickly, pulling her into a gentle, careful hug. “That’s wonderful. Truly wonderful.”
My father’s reaction was quieter, though no less genuine, something soft and grateful crossing his tired features as he took in the news. “Congratulations, both of you. Genuinely.”
“Thank you,” Evelyn said, some of her earlier distress easing slightly beneath the warmth of their obvious happiness for us.
“But,” my mother said, glancing toward me, understanding immediately that something more complicated underlay the announcement, “you mentioned needing to talk about security as well.”
“Yes,” I said, sobering quickly as we all settled into the living room. “Given everything with Genevieve, given how she’s already circumvented our security twice now, we need a comprehensive plan to protect Evelyn and the pregnancy, not just react to individual incidents as they occur.”
My father shifted forward slightly, his expression sharpening with the same focused attention I remembered from before his health crisis, before everything shifted so dramatically these past several weeks. “What are you thinking, specifically?”
