Chapter 113
Evelyn pov
I stared down at the pregnancy test in my shaking hands, the two pink lines blurring slightly through the tears already gathering in my eyes.
Three weeks since the box of dead flowers appeared on our porch. Three weeks of increased security, of careful, cautious movement through the compound, of Genevieve’s continued, unsettling presence hanging over everything even as the council’s investigation dragged forward without clear resolution. Three weeks of exhaustion I’d attributed entirely to stress, to fear, to the accumulated weight of everything still unresolved.
I hadn’t considered, not once, that it might be something else entirely.
I sat down heavily on the edge of the bathtub, the test still clutched in my trembling hand, replaying everything-the nausea I’d dismissed as anxiety, the exhaustion I’d blamed on sleepless nights spent listening for any sound outside our window, the missed cycle I’d barely registered given everything else demanding my attention.
*Pregnant.*
The word settled heavy and disorienting in my chest, joy and fear tangling together so completely I couldn’t fully separate one from the other.
I thought about the two nights, weeks ago now, when Damon and I had finally, fully reconnected-careful and tender, both of us still healing but genuinely, completely present with each other for the first time since everything fell apart. It had felt perfect then, a genuine culmination of months of careful rebuilding, evidence that whatever we were building together was real enough to actually deepen rather than simply
remain cautiously stable.
Now, staring at this test, that perfect memory tangled with fresh, immediate fear.
*I’m pregnant, and someone is actively threatening our family.*
I pressed a hand against my still-flat stomach, thinking of Willow sleeping peacefully in her crib in the next room, thinking of the security detail currently stationed outside our door, thinking of Genevieve’s continued, unresolved threat still hanging over all of us despite weeks of careful investigation and heightened protection.
Damon was with his father right now, going over updated security protocols following yet another concerning incident two days earlier-a note left directly in his father’s hospital room despite the supposedly heightened security, proof that whatever Genevieve was actually capable of, she remained frustratingly capable of circumventing whatever protective measures we continued implementing.
“Hey.” He moved closer, gently taking my face in his hands, wiping at my tears with careful, tender attention. “Breathe. Whatever you’re feeling right now, it’s okay. Just breathe.”
I took a shaky breath, leaning into his touch, grateful for his steady presence even as fear continued churning beneath the surface.
“I’m scared,” I admitted quietly. “Not just about the pregnancy itself, though that’s overwhelming enough on its own. I’m scared about bringing a baby into this, into everything happening with Genevieve, into a situation that’s already this dangerous and unresolved.”
“I know,” he said softly, understanding immediately without needing further explanation. “I’m scared too, if I’m honest. But Evelyn, we’re going to figure this out. Whatever it takes to keep you, Willow, and now this baby safe, I’m going to make sure it happens.”
“How,” I asked, genuine desperation entering my voice. “She’s already circumvented our security twice now. Left threatening notes despite heightened protection. What happens if she escalates further, especially once she learns I’m pregnant?”
Something tightened in Damon’s expression at that, understanding the genuine weight of the question.” We don’t have to tell anyone yet, beyond people we absolutely trust. We can keep this private for now, at least until the investigation into Genevieve reaches some kind of actual resolution.”
