Chapter 65
“Hades,” Jackson’s voice interrupts me.
I turn, hiding my scowl. He didn’t know it, but I had seen the mark on his neck this mornin,g and it had taken everything I had not to leap over the table and throttle him. Even now, I was feeling particularly violent towards him. I took a moment to gather my composure and then turned, raising a brow.
“What is it?” I asked tersely.
He frowned at me. “There’s a serious problem with the patrol rosters. We have too many people on patrol, according to this. I haven’t organized extra people, have you?” he prodded.
“No,” I said, perplexed, “what does it matter?”
Maybe we had forgotten to update the rosters or something. Although now that I thought about it, Jackson was extremely diligent when it came to them. He was in charge of security after all. If he was concerned, then there was every reason to be. But what would explain the difference in numbers?
“Because,” he said impatiently, “there’s no explanation for the extra people and their names aren’t on the roster. They’ve magically appeared out of nowhere. I don’t think they belong to our pack,” he said lowly,” because I can’t recall seeing them before and I was careful to observe them from afar, so that they didn’t become suspicious. They also have a strange smell on them as though they’ve taken something to
mask their scent.”
“How many extras?” I snapped to attention.
“On the far east side. I’ve advised patrol to continue as normal so as not to draw attention. They dress like our men, but something is definitely off. What do you want to do?”
“Have patrol nab them and bring them in. Send our best warriors to take them by surprise so they don’t have a way out. If you’re right, we’ll be able to get answers out of them. I don’t’ want them to be able to alert anybody either,” I warned, “so get them tranquilized with silver beforehand.”
“I’m on it. I apologize,” he bowed his head to me, “I should have picked up on this earlier. I have been distracted,” he apologized.
“I didn’t pick up on it either. I’ve been too involved with my own drama and Marissa. We’re both to blame. At least you noticed there was something wrong.”
He looks relieved. He begins to mind-link our people, his eyes glazing over. I clench my jaw, furious with myself. I should have noted that there were unknown shifters on patrol. We tended to use those familiar to us, and I knew practically everybody in the pack, regardless of how large it was. For them to sneak by me…I needed to pay more attention. This wasn’t coincidence. Everything was linked. I just needed to find out answers. These men were about to regret ever coming to my pack.
