Chapter 47
“You didn’t cheat, though, did you?” Damien asked doubtfully.
It would be completely out of his father’s character and everything that Damien knew about him. He had always thought his father was an honorable man.
“What kind of man do you take me for? I broke it off before I made it official with Grace,” his father exclaimed, “and we were so relieved when we found out that MaryAnne had married and had children. It meant she would finally leave us alone.”
“You didn’t look into MaryAnne Sinclair stealing your child?” Damien was bewildered.
After everything that had happened it would have made MaryAnne Sinclair the prime suspect in his eyes.
“I considered her, but she had an airtight alibi. At the time of the kidnapping, she was giving birth herself. Multiple witnesses saw her having twins. There’s been no mention of a third child.”
Damien fought the tears back that were threatening to fall. For 21 long years, his father had followed every godforsaken clue, tracked down any hint of somebody bearing his mother’s resemblance, and used every resource he had available to him. He was starting to lose hope, that much was clear. He sounded broken, defeated. Damien didn’t want to cause his father further anguish. He would keep thing to himself for now, lest this be just another dead end.
“Okay, father,” he whispered thickly, “I’ll let it go. I won’t speculate anymore.”
“Good boy. Just leave the past where it belongs. I’m tired now,” Alpha Daxton murmured, already turning away, “I think I’ll go get some rest.”
Damien watched him go quietly, feeling his father’s pain. His hand slowly crept to his pocket, fingering the small strands of hair he’d managed to pluck from Raven’s head. His father might want to leave the past where it belonged, but Damien wasn’t going to give up so easily. The truth would come to light, no matter how many stones he had to upturn or clues he had to dig up himself.
