Rejected, Abused, I Fall for the Forbidden Alpha (by Riley Scott) novel Chapter 284

Chapter 284

Asher POV

I watch with fear as Aaron launches himself at the rogues. There’s nothing but bodies rolling over the ground. A flash of black mixed with the grey wolves. Aaron’s fast, easily dispatching two, but there’s still six left, and two of them are eyeing me, breaking off from the group to stalk closer as I hesitate.

I have no choice. Even as Aaron desperately tries to break off to get to me, I shift, transforming into my runt form.

I’m not strong, but I’m agile. I wait, glancing between them as they lick their snouts, their eyes glowing brighter in the sunlight.

They pounce. Unfortunately for them, I’m still standing relatively close to the cliff face, and in their recklessness, they think they have me cornered.

Wrong.

I wait until the critical moment and just before they land, I dart forward and kick out, sending them flying over the edge, their howls fading into the distance.

Aaron’s still outnumbered. There are four wolves, and although he’s fighting with ferocity, he’s covered in injuries, his fur covered in blood.

Where was Alpha Damien?

We were far from the packhouse, and I knew waiting for assistance was going to be futile.

I barrelled into the group, ignoring Aaron’s directives.

I couldn’t stand back while my mate got hurt because he was desperately trying to protect me. I would rather die by his side than keep back like a coward.

I lashed out, catching one rogue off guard. Two of them break away, leaving Aaron facing two.

At least now Aaron’s odds were better. I backed up as they moved closer, eyes glinting, bodies poised to attack.

I turned and ran. I headed directly for the trees, weaving between them, leading them on a merry chase. Their bodies thundered through the forest, eager to get to me, but I wasn’t making it easy on them.

I propelled myself forward, paws thudding on the dirt, heart thumping wildly.

I spared a thought for Aaron, praying he was alright and that he could defeat the rogues I’d been forced to leave him behind with.

Please, god, let him be okay. If he dies because of me, I’ll never forgive myself. I think I have feelings for him, even though we haven’t known each other long.

I heard loud snarls behind me.

The rogues were becoming impatient. They were also drawing nearer to me. My speed was no match for theirs, and they broke the distance, circling me as I paused in my tracks.

I kept watch, looking for an opening, but they were clever now, refusing to give me a way out, backing me slowly until my body backed right into a tree.

“I’m alright, but Aaron…” I gasped, turning to look in the direction he was, “he’s still fighting. What if he’s hurt?” I babbled, poised to go running back.

Marissa quickly moved and took hold of my arm, refusing to let me.

“Damien’s already gone to help him. If you go back, you might distract Aaron,” she said quietly.

She was right.

My shoulders slumped.

“I was too weak,” I whispered, my voice breaking, “too weak to help him properly. He should never have agreed to be mates with me.”

“Look at me,” Marissa commanded, “listen here, Asher. Your wolf does not define your worth. Your character does. Aaron loves you for who you are, not what you can do. You did the best you could, you led rogues away from him. Trust me, that was helpful. If anything, our pack failed you. This amount of rogues should never have made it this far into our territory.”

I blinked back tears.

Her words soothed me.

She hugged me, holding me tight.

“Trust me, Aaron’s one of our best fighters. He’s not Beta of this pack for nothing. I promise you, he’s going to be fine. Have faith,” she murmured.
