Once that subject passed, Seamus immediately steered the conversation back toward far more important matters, namely which girls in the academy deserved the title of campus belle and who was secretly dating whom.
Steven only half–listened. If he stayed in the dorms tonight, would anyone notice the Beast Energy Conversion?
Maybe it would be safer to spend the night at the villa instead. He could monitor himself and finally see what the conversion process actually looked like from the outside.
And while he was at it, he could check in on Peter.
After sitting around with the others for a while longer, he quietly sent Bianca a message, asking if she wanted to stay out tonight.
Her reply came quickly. “Yes.”
Steven rose with a grin. “I’m heading out for the night. Didn’t bring a change of clothes anyway.”
Seamus narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “Going home?”
“No. My girlfriend’s got a place nearby. I left some stuff there when we arrived, and I’ve got a few things to take care of, so I’ll stay there tonight.”
The room fell silent for a beat. Then every head snapped toward him, showing a look of surprise.
Seamus looked personally betrayed. “Steven… Your girlfriend isn’t secretly 60 years old, is she?”
Steven nearly choked. “What kind of question is that?”
“Then how does she already own property out here? Do you know what housing costs around the academy? Either she’s insanely rich, or her family owns half the district.”
Steven sighed. “No. She’s just a normal person. Look, I’ll explain later. I’ll be back tomorrow evening. I’m
out.”
The chorus of envy that followed him out the door nearly echoed down the hall.
Steven still had no intention of telling them who Bianca really was. The less attention, the better. Otherwise, they would think he was flaunting it.
They could figure it out on their own eventually.
When he met up with Bianca outside, the faint pink tint in her cheeks deepened the moment she saw him. Tonight they were staying together.
What if he tried something?
The thought had wrapped itself around her mind so tightly she could barely think straight.
“We’re going to see Peter first,” he said. “Maybe we can mooch dinner off him.”

“Oh. Okay.” Bianca’s thoughts were still spinning. It was her first time sharing a room with someone like this.
Peter was sprawled by the floor–to–ceiling windows, coffee in hand, looking deeply comfortable with the world.
“Well, look who’s awake. Hey there, old man Peter.”
Steven walked in and announced himself.
Peter turned his head, already smiling.
“You little brat. Call me ‘old man‘ again.”
“I won’t. Bianca might get the wrong idea.”
Darlene and Bianca both struggled to hide their smiles.
Peter glanced toward Bianca. “Bianca, would you mind if I beat him unconscious?”
Bianca blinked once, then shook her head with surprising honesty. “Not really.”
Peter cracked his knuckles with a grin.
“You heard the lady. Come here and take your beating.”
Bianca quickly added, “Just don’t hit him too hard.”
Peter rolled his eyes. “And if I hadn’t, you think you could’ve killed that level 2 Ghost–Faced Spider alone?”

She opened the spatial converter, and a glittering pile of pale crystals spilled into view.
Which was exactly why so many people desperately fought to join an Awakened Squad or enter military
service.
Power, resources, opportunity. Those things had always gathered in the hands of the few, no matter the era.
Of course, Team Ashen also operated at a far higher level than most squads. Their territory was larger, their missions more dangerous, and the number of beasts they hunted far exceeded ordinary teams.
Most squads earned far less.
Steven looked toward Darlene. “Can you exchange these for beast crystals instead?”
Both Darlene and Peter frowned.
“What do you need that many beast crystals for?” Peter asked.
“Told you already. Research.” Steven’s tone carried an easy sort of amusement. “Trade secret.”
He shrugged lightly. “As for divine crystals, the academy already covers most of my Evolution resources. Bianca’s status comes with perks.”
Darlene hesitated. “You could still save them. Use them later for gear upgrades or equipment.”
Steven shook his head without a second thought. “Not interested right now.”
Darlene eventually relented. “Fine. I still have beast crystals on me. You want level 1 or level 2?”
“Level 1 is enough.”
She nodded. “Then that’ll be one hundred level 1 beast crystals.”
Steven smiled. The exchange rate between low–level divine crystals and level 1 beast crystals had always been ten to one. Level 2 beast crystals, meanwhile, were worth ten times that.
