My side

Chapter 8 Bianca, I’ve Got Your Back!

It took Steven a long time to recover from the shock.

Which meant that after dying in his previous life, through some impossible coincidence, part of Crimson–Eyed Heavenfang’s power had entered his body and traveled back in time with him.

Then this bizarre beast energy conversion ability appeared inside him, something that could almost be understood as a kind of system.

He could slowly convert Crimson–Eyed Heavenfang’s beast energy into attributes for his own body.

He had even gained a talent called Eye of Insight.

If I want to convert beast energy, does that mean I need other beast crystals to power this beast energy conversion ability?

After thinking it over repeatedly, this explanation seemed to make the most sense.

Then another thought hit him. This is a good thing!

Doesn’t this basically mean my talent has been indirectly upgraded?

If all my physical attributes can continue increasing dramatically, then the possibilities will be unimaginable. Maybe in this life, I won’t stop at becoming a ThreeSigil Divine Adept!

Steven was overjoyed and bounced around excitedly on the bed.

Maybe this life really will be different!

After calming down slightly, he checked his injuries.

Steven raised an eyebrow slightly. Why do my wounds seem to have healed so much already?

“Come eat! Are you still going to school or not?”

Brian’s voice came from outside the room.

Steven grinned widely, quickly got dressed, washed up, and joined Brian for breakfast.

In this era, food had become extremely simple, and most people survived on compressed

rations.

Most of it was dry food.

A single compressed biscuit contained all sorts of nutritional energy.

Only Brian somehow managed to get his hands on some seeds and grow fruits and vegetables that only wealthy families could afford in this era.

“After school, come straight home. Don’t wander around outside. Things haven’t been peaceful lately,” Brian reminded him.

Steven smiled and nodded. “Got it, Grandpa. I’ll come back early today.”

“Once you awaken your Divine Sigil, you’ll finally have some ability to protect yourself. Before that, stay out of trouble.”

Steven grinned. “Grandpa, how do you know I’ll awaken a Divine Sigil? What if I don’t?”

Brian glanced at him. “Then you’ll keep behaving yourself.”

Steven paused, speechless.

“Grandpa, enjoy your breakfast. I’m heading to school.”

Steven put down his utensils and disappeared in a flash.

Brian watched his grandson leave before slowly setting down his utensils.

A deep emotion flickered in his eyes.

He murmured softly, “I’d rather you never awaken a Divine Sigil… This world’s far more complicated than you think…”

On the way to school, Steven hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided not to stop by Bianca’s house.

They were probably busy arranging her father’s cremation.

She most likely wouldn’t come to school today.

In this chaotic era of drastically reduced population, every child who hadn’t gone through Divine Awakening yet was considered one of the nation’s precious assets, and strict regulations. were placed on them.

All of them had to attend school, and if someone disappeared, investigations and official reports would immediately follow.

But after Divine Awakening, things became different.

Those who failed to awaken a Divine Sigil either took the SAT and pursued university or went home and learned a trade instead.

That was why Divine Awakening was the greatest turning point in life during this era.

As for whether someone could awaken a Divine Sigil at all, it was entirely luck. There was no logic behind it.

The moment Steven walked into the classroom, he immediately saw Bianca sitting alone in the corner with her head lowered as she quietly read a book. Her faded old uniform made her look completely unremarkable.

Steven was startled. Why did she still come to school?

Steven’s appearance immediately drew the attention of the class.

But Steven ignored everyone’s stares.

He also completely ignored Timothy’s hostile glare.

Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Steven walked straight past Lilliana and Timothy, who sat in the third row, and headed directly toward Bianca’s corner seat.

Suddenly, cheers erupted throughout the classroom.

“Hahaha! We won! Hurry up and pay! Pay up!”

Some of the other students looked pained. They actually lost the bet.

Steven really was ignoring Lilliana now.

Steven looked completely baffled. So these people actually bet on me?

Lilliana, sitting in the third row, quietly clenched her fists. That guy is really ignoring me!

Timothy let out a mocking laugh, assuming his warning yesterday had worked.

One less rival wasn’t a bad thing.

He’d let Steven enjoy himself for now. This afternoon during combat class, he’d settle the score properly.

Steven ignored everyone and walked straight over to Bianca before sitting beside her.

Bianca’s heart skipped slightly. Why did he come over here?

“Why’d you come to school? Don’t you need to handle things at home?” Steven’s gentle voice sounded beside her.

Bianca looked up at him nervously.

“N–no… it’s already been handled…”

Steven frowned slightly. “You could’ve taken the day off. Just ask for leave.”

Bianca lowered her head, her fingers nervously poking against each other beneath the desk.

“I thought you probably wouldn’t come today… so I wanted to help ask for leave for you…”

Steven’s heart instantly softened.

Aww. My old little heart is about to melt.

So the future Ember Eternal is actually this cute.

Steven smiled. “Thanks for that.”

Bianca shook her head. “N–no… your injuries…”

Hmph! So he likes someone else now?

Does he really think I will chase after someone who ignores me?

That’s who I am, an ugly duckling nobody notices or cares about, no matter where I go

Maybe I really should distance myself from Steven. I don’t want to affect him anymore.

Bianca froze too and looked up at Steven’s cold expression.

“Steven, what the hell’s your problem?” one boy suddenly stood up angrily.

Steven instantly locked his gaze onto the boy.

“What’s my problem? You people think mocking and bullying Bianca somehow makes you better than everyone else?

“Chris, haven’t you made Bianca run errands for you plenty of times?”

Chris Little was instantly shut down by that single sentence.

His face turned red and pale by turns.

Then Steven looked elsewhere.

“Madeline, how much homework have you dumped onto Bianca?”

Another student lowered his head awkwardly in embarrassment.

“Lily, Grace, Vivian… how many errands have you all made Bianca run? How many meals has she bought for you?”

The group of girls immediately looked embarrassed and irritated.

But Steven wasn’t letting them off.

“Do none of you have a conscience?

“Ugly duckling? Have you people even looked at yourselves?”

The students he called out all looked furious now.

Timothy saw Steven openly calling out the entire class over Bianca.

He let out a cold laugh and stood up immediately.

“Steven! What exactly are you trying to say? That’s just classmates helping each other out. Why

are you twisting it into something ugly? You looking for trouble?”

The moment Timothy spoke, the students Steven called out instantly regained confidence.

“Yeah! Steven, stop making things up. Bianca volunteered. It was just helping each other!”

Hearing that, Steven let out a mocking laugh.

“Helping each other? You people think you deserve to say that? What exactly did any of you ever help her with? Besides bullying and mocking her, when have you ever done a single thing for her? Do you people have no shame?

“Timothy, I didn’t even mention you at first because I was trying to save you some dignity. You’re the class president, yet you lead everyone in bullying your own classmate. How much stuff have you dumped onto Bianca? Every time it’s your turn to clean, how many times have you forced Bianca to do it for you?

“And you think you deserve to be class president?”

Steven argued against the entire class by himself without backing down even slightly.

Meanwhile, the students who hadn’t been called out were already completely dumbfounded.

What’s wrong with Steven today?

Has he lost his mind?

He’s seriously willing to go against this many classmates just for Bianca?

“Steven!!!” Timothy shouted furiously.

“Quit yelling! What, you think having a loud voice makes you impressive? Seriously, what are you so proud of?”

Timothy was both furious and shocked. “Hey!”

“I’m telling all of you right now. From today onward, if anyone dares bully Bianca again, they will answer to me!

“Bianca’s under my protection now!!”

Bianca stared blankly at Steven as her eyes slowly reddened and shimmered with emotion.

Sois this what it feels like to have someone protect you?
