Reborn: Apocalypse Ready. War Goddess by My Side novel Chapter 71

hapter 71 Blood and Spears

A pillar of light erupted skyward from the stake.

Peter’s jaw hit the floor.

“When have you ever operated a Divine Barrier stake before?”

Steven watched the Barrier seal into place, the corner of his mouth curving upward.

“First time in this life.”

Peter’s brain stalled. How was this kid so proficient?

Steven stood in full battle armor, spear in hand, and his entire bearing shifted—as though a seasoned, battle–hardened soldier had stepped into the body of a teenager.

Peter stared.

“Blooddrinkers, engage! Annihilate those things before they breach the surface!”

Alan’s voice thundered through the comms.

“Copy!”

“Copy!”

Steven and Peter had nothing to do for the moment.

Their job was to hold the Divine Barrier stakes. If beasts broke through the front line, they’d follow the Barrier wall to locate and destroy the power source.

That was the rearguard’s primary duty.

Sounds of slaughter filtered through the earpiece.

Along with Olivia’s real–time tactical updates.

Peter lit a cigarette, exhaled a lazy ring of smoke.

“Seriously, kid. What’s your deal? How do you know all this stuff?”

Steven’s voice was flat. “See enough, and you just know.”

Peter clearly didn’t buy it.

“You really have Divine Envoy–level combat ability?”

Steven thought it over. “I don’t have Sigil power behind it, but in terms of raw physical combat, I should be there. You saw what I did last time, right? Now with this armor and a spear, I shouldn’t have any trouble with

level 1 beasts.

Peter mulled that over. The kid had a point. Last time, unarmed and unarmored, he’d punted a level 1 Bloodfang Rat clean across the room.

That kind of raw strength was hard to fathom.

“Seriously, where does a scrawny kid like you get that kind of power?” Peter muttered.

That was when Olivia’s voice cut through the earpiece.

“Heads up, everyone. It’s not just Ghost–Faced Spiders–there’s a pack of Bloodfang Rats inbound too!”

The news sent a jolt through the team.

This mission had just gotten considerably more complicated than anyone had anticipated.

Steven’s expression hardened.

Ghost–Faced Spiders and Bloodfang Rats were both among the most common beast types. Mostly level 1, with the occasional specimen evolving to level 2 or level 3.

“Captain Greenwood, one level 3 Bloodfang Rat King and one level 3 Ghost–Faced Spider Queen are heading your way. Be extremely careful.”

“Copy.” Alan’s voice was calm as stone.

Steven knew that Alan was a Four–Sigil Divine Knight, probably high–level, possibly approaching the Divine General threshold.

Level 3 beasts shouldn’t be a problem for him.

It wasn’t long before-

“Peter, Steven–four level 1 Bloodfang Rats and four level 1 Ghost–Faced Spiders are approaching your stakes from two separate Barrier walls. Watch yourselves!”

Steven and Peter tensed simultaneously.

“Copy!”

“Copy!”

In that instant, Steven felt the blood in his veins begin to boil.

His battle lust was surging. His blood was roaring.

He wanted to fight.

And he tossed back a single line.

Peter nearly had an aneurysm. Was this kid genuinely not afraid of anything?

The armor only amplified Strength–it didn’t touch his other attributes.

That meant it added roughly 11 points of raw Strength.

Already formidable.

At nearly 38 points of Strength, the force he could generate was genuinely terrifying.

Steven closed the distance on the four snarling Bloodfang Rats.

Under the Eye of Insight, their movements seemed to slow, every twitch and lunge laid bare.

The rats lunged at him, jaws gaping.

The spear shot forward like a dragon erupting from the deep.

The first thrust punched clean through a Bloodfang Rat’s skull with savage force. A shriek of agony, and the beast died instantly.

He didn’t hesitate for even a fraction of a second.

He wrenched the spear sideways.

With the impaled rat still on the shaft, he swung the entire weapon like a club and slammed the carcass into the next rat.

The second rat was launched off its feet.

At the same time, the remaining two Bloodfang Rats hurled themselves at Steven.
