Chapter 70 Into the Fray

Alan was silent for a moment.

“Peter–get him a spare set of your battle armor and a weapon. Patch him into the team comm. Olivia, add him to the network.

“Peter, you and Steven guard the Divine Barrier stakes together. Move out–now.”

Peter, Darlene, and Olivia were all stunned.

“Captain Greenwood?!”

Alan’s voice was iron. “Move out.”

Then he cut the connection.

Peter and Darlene looked at each other like they’d completely lost their minds.

They were actually bringing a high schooler who’d just completed his Divine Awakening on a live combat

mission.

It was unprecedented.

Bianca’s worry was immediate.

“Steven! It’s going to be dangerous. I’m coming with you.”

He shook his head. “I’ll be fine. I’ve done this kind of thing before. Wait here for us to get back, and then I’ll take you home.”

The certainty in his eyes left Bianca unable to argue.

Peter was cursing up a storm. “This is insane.”

Steven flashed a grin. “What’s the matter? Don’t consider me a real teammate?”

Peter swore again, but his hands were already moving.

He pulled a spare set of battle armor from his spatial converter and tossed it to Steven.

Steven recognized the familiar armor. He didn’t hesitate.

Under Peter’s and Darlene’s astonished stares, he put it on with fluid, practiced motions–as though this suit had always been his.

How was he this familiar with it?

Has he actually worn armor like this before?

Seeing that, they stopped arguing.

Peter suited up as well, then pulled a black spear from his converter and tossed it to Steven.

“Stay on my command the entire time.”

Steven nodded.

He ran a quick diagnostic on the armor’s combat systems. Everything checked out.

Within minutes, they were ready.

They jumped straight into the vehicle.

Bianca watched Steven leave, her heart in her throat. “Steven, please be careful!”

Steven nodded. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back before you know it.”

Bianca’s eyes shimmered, but there was nothing she could do.

She could only watch as the armored vehicle lifted off and rocketed into the sky.

The building’s upper floors had been modified for direct vehicle launch.

In the vehicle…

Peter was grumbling. “You’re out of your mind. The Captain’s out of his mind.”

“Quit your whining. I might end up saving your ass out there,” Steven replied.

“Yeah, right. Just stay close and don’t do anything stupid.”

“Enough, both of you!” Olivia’s voice crackled through everyone’s earpieces.

She continued, “Pull up the mission brief. Beast locations and Barrier stake positions have all been

calculated.”

Steven focused, and a virtual display materialized before his eyes.

Olivia began the rundown.

“The beasts this time are similar to the ones from the east–side incursion–they’re coming up through the old underground drainage tunnels.

“Military sensors are showing significantly larger numbers this time. Multiple squads have already been dispatched.

“Current projections suggest a high probability of level 2 beasts, with level 3 specimens also possible. This one’s going to be dangerouseveryone stay sharp.”

Darlene drove the vehicle away. As the team’s mobile Healer, the moment anyone took a hit, she had to be first on the scene.

They reached their assigned coordinates.

Steven and Peter opened comms at almost exactly the same time.

“Captain Greenwood! We’re in position!”

Two other voices crackled through the earpiece.

“About time!”

Alan’s command rang out.

“Copy!”

“Copy!”

Before Peter had even started pulling the Barrier stakes off his back, Steven was already in motion.

Steven was already in motion.

“Hey, kid-”

Peter didn’t even finish his sentence.

Steven had already planted the Divine Barrier stake with practiced ease.

Drawing on the technique seared into his memory from his previous life, he channeled the power of his Wind–Fire Divine Sigil.

He channeled the power of his Wind–Fire Divine Sigil.

He called out, “Activate!”
