Chapter 61 A Parade of Unwanted Guests

“Mr. Fisher, I’ll take my leave now.”

Brian smiled and nodded.

Under everyone’s watchful gaze, Jensen climbed into his car and was gone within moments.

Inside the car, Jensen was soaked in cold sweat. Damn it. He’d nearly lost control back there and almost let something slip.

Steven shot his grandfather a suspicious look.

The old man returned his gaze, as though he understood exactly what Steven was thinking, but had no intention of saying a word about it.

Instead, what he said was, “The fact that you understand joining the military isn’t a good idea proves you’ve got at least half a brain.”

Steven had nothing to say to that.

“Grandpa, do I usually look that dumb?”

Brian glanced at him and replied with casual indifference. “You’re about average. More people are going to show up with gifts. You two can handle them yourselves from here–I’m not making an appearance for every single one.”

Steven and Bianca nodded.

“Grandpa, when people bring gifts for Bianca, should she accept them or not?”

The old man turned his stooped frame slowly.

“As long as they’re not people you’ve got bad blood with, it’s fine to accept. No point embarrassing anyone for no reason. You’re both still relatively weak right now, and it’s just a token gesture to put faces to names. Nothing too serious.”

Steven nodded. “Got it.”

Grandpa went back inside.

Vanessa pulled her daughter aside. “Bianca, have you really made up your mind?”

Bianca nodded firmly. “Mom, I’ve decided. I’m not going to the military. I want to stay with…”

She trailed off, too embarrassed to finish the sentence.

But anyone with eyes could fill in the blank.

Vanessa nodded. “If that’s what you’ve decided, then I won’t say anything more. You two figure it out on your

own.”

“Brian is right. You young people should follow your own hearts.”

Bianca hummed in agreement and nodded emphatically.

She stole a glance at Steven, then quickly ducked her head, the faintest smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

Steven looked at the sky. He looked at the ground. Some things were better left unsaid.

Before long, there was another knock at the door…

Their little street was getting busier by the hour.

The neighbors were thoroughly baffled.

Why were so many people making pilgrimages to old Brian’s house?

Had the family struck it rich?

Most people had no idea what was going on.

Sure, everyone knew Rowenville had produced an SSS–rank prodigy, but that was supposed to be a girl- and Brian only had a grandson, didn’t he?

Steven and Bianca continued receiving their visitors.

A wave of representatives arrived all at once from Awakened Academies across multiple major cities.

Among them were delegates from several major metro cities and even a couple of first–tier metropolises.

Every single one came bearing extraordinarily generous offers, all hoping to recruit Bianca to their institution.

The value represented by a single SSS–rank Awakened was impossible to measure.

Going to their academy, they insisted, was the only path to true growth.

Or, at the very least, telling each delegation they’d get back to them.

Wave after wave, they sent them off.

They managed to avoid embarrassing any of their visitors while also avoiding saddling Bianca with obligations she’d regret.

Inside the house, the old man was fully aware of every decision Steven had made.

The faintest smile crossed his lips. This is satisfactory.

The stream of visitors didn’t let up until the afternoon.

By then, both of them felt completely drained.

“Steven, I never knew being SSS–rank was this exhausting. Every single one of them looked more excited about it than I was,” Bianca grumbled, her lips pursed in a pout.

Steven laughed. “Don’t worry. It’ll only last a day or two.”

But then, Bianca looked at the mountain of supplies piled nearly to the ceiling inside the house, and a different kind of expression crossed her face.

“Feels like we’ve got enough food to last a year or two. I guess that’s not so bad.”

Steven chuckled. “If we’d accepted the stuff we turned down and converted it to daily supplies, it would’ve been enough to last a lifetime.”

“Wait, really?” A flash of regret crossed Bianca’s face.

“Don’t go there. If we’d taken all that, you’d never hear the end of it.”

When they saw who was standing there, both Steven and Bianca froze for a beat.

A flicker of surprise crossed their faces.

Two people had arrived.
