The base’s storefront entrance looked like one of those shady places that made people’s imaginations run wild. But inside, it was completely different.

The place was packed with high–tech equipment and had a futuristic feel.

Everyone gathered around and took their seats.

Bianca had come along too.

She wasn’t officially part of the team yet, but everyone already accepted her as one of them. They simply treated her as a probationary member.

Fiona had calmed down as well. She had returned to her usual cold expression.

Alan looked around the room.

“There are two things we need to discuss.

“First, changes to the team’s roster.

“We suffered heavy losses during the last mission.

“Big Spoon was killed in action.

“Uriah and Mason are no longer fit for combat. That leaves two empty Rearguard positions.”

The room fell silent.

Uriah and Mason’s eyes dimmed.

They hadn’t expected their journey to end like this.

But for them, surviving was already a miracle.

Peter patted both men on the shoulders and smiled.

“You may be leaving the squad, but we’re still brothers. We aren’t saying our final goodbyes.”

Everyone felt a little sad to part with them.

It was common among Awakened squads, but it was the first time it had happened to Ashen.

Uriah smiled and said, “I’m lucky just to be alive. My path as an Awakened ends here. I’m glad I got to fight alongside all of you these past few years.

“I guess I’m retiring early. I won’t be able to stand beside you anymore, but all of you need to stay alive out there. Under the captain’s leadership, our team will reach the top one day.”

Everyone sighed.

Mason also smiled at the team. “I’m not as good with words as Uriah. So I’ll keep it simple. Don’t die. And come looking for me once in a while. Buy me dinner and have a few drinks with me.”

The sorrowful mood eased a little.

Mason’s eyes had turned red. He looked at Steven. “Even though we’re leaving the team, you still need to give us pointers now and then. We’re not useless.”

Steven smiled and nodded. “Don’t worry. I won’t forget you.”

Smiles finally appeared on everyone’s faces.

Fiona also snapped out of her earlier emotions.

For the first time, she truly felt like part of this

A Vanguard represented the best warrior in the team.

The team’s shield. Its pillar. Its spear.

Usually, only someone second only to the captain in strength could hold that position.

When danger struck, the Vanguard had to step forward and carve a bloody path through the enemy.
