Chapter 16 Spectators

Voices of open admiration rippled through the crowd from every

direction.
She felt like she’d humiliated herself in front of the entire school, and the worst part was she couldn’t even deny it.
She was dangerously close to tears. Where is the Dean of Students?
Steven’s eyes stayed cold and razor–sharp. He never let his guard down when there was an enemy in front of him.
Rufus, watching everything from the shadows, had his mouth hanging wide open.
Then a voice cracked through the training hall like a war hammer finding its mark.
“Stand down!”
The rough, commanding bellow hit every student in the chest like a shockwave, and the entire room went rigid.
The Dean of Students had arrived.
A man in a coach’s uniform came striding toward the crowd at a hard, rapid pace.
The fight stopped instantly. Steven stepped back and stood with the spear upright in his grip, carrying himself with an effortless, unshakeable dignity.
“What exactly is going on here?”
The Dean of Students was a heavyset man with a slight paunch and a thin, neat mustache trimmed with the precision of someone who cared very much about small things.
His face at that moment was as dark and still as the sky before a storm breaks.
Steven’s expression didn’t change.
Cassandra saw her backup had finally arrived.
She crossed to the Dean’s side with her eyes still raw and red, looking for all the world like a wounded, helpless victim.

“Sir!” Her voice trembled. “I can’t keep teaching this class. I really can’t.

“This student didn’t just insult me. He assaulted his classmates, and look at what he did to me.
“He has to be expelled. There’s no other option.”
The Dean’s gaze made a brief, carefully discreet sweep over Cassandra’s figure before settling back into its practiced sternness.
“Tell me exactly what happened,” he said, his face still dark.
“This student, Steven,” Cassandra began, her voice quivering, “hurt a classmate yesterday. When
I asked him to write a self–reflection essay, he told me to go write one myself…”
She told the whole story from there. She downplayed every part that mattered and embellished every part that didn’t.
The Dean’s expression darkened with every sentence she delivered.
And beneath that grim, official exterior, something entirely different was running through his mind. This is my chance to get on this woman’s good side.
“Outrageous!” His voice filled the hall. “How did someone like you end up at this school?
“Assaulting a teacher and your fellow students!
“You will be expelled!
“Move it! You’re coming with me to my office right now. The absolute nerve.”
The Dean’s verdict landed like a sentence handed down from on high.
The students around them went pale. Steven was finished.
Bianca’s composure cracked completely.
“Sir! That’s not what happened! It was-”
The Dean fixed her with a look that cut her off instantly.
“Quiet! I’ll handle the investigation myself.”
He turned back to Steven, his voice dripping with contempt. “Steven, is it? Come with me. If you take behavior like this out into the real world, I dread to think what would happen. You’re dragging this school’s name straight through the dirt.”
Bianca was right on the edge of tears.

Steven looked at the Dean. These two are cut from the exact same cloth, both of them.
A cold, crystalline clarity settled over him.
Timothy was already grinning.

“I want to see if there is a single person in this building who will stand up for what’s right.”
Steven took his stance. The spear leveled forward, and every person it pointed toward fell back without even deciding to.
The entire hall shuddered.
He was actually going to fight the Dean of Students.
Not one person spoke.
In that instant, something moved through the watching students like lightning moving through standing water.
It was the feeling of blood running hot, of something long suppressed finally breaking the surface.
Whoa, he’s really doing this.
He’s got balls of steel.
Most of the students knew, even if they’d never once said it aloud, that certain teachers at this school played favorites without shame.
They fawned over students from wealthy families.
They bent rules in those students‘ favor whenever it suited them, and they always found a way to make it look reasonable.
But no one had ever been willing to drag it into the open, to say it plainly where it couldn’t be denied or quietly buried.

Today, Steven had ripped that curtain away entirely.
Something in the room came fiercely, electrically alive.

But the Dean of Students wasn’t just an ordinary Awakened. He was a Two–Sigil Divine Envoy.
Steven couldn’t possibly match that kind of power.
And yet Steven’s eyes burned with something that looked entirely unbreakable. No matter who stepped forward today, if justice wasn’t served here, he would make sure this whole rotten structure came down around their ears.
