Scarlett opened her eyes. Her body felt like it had been wrung out. She couldn't muster an ounce of strength.
Damian saw how worn out and dazed she looked. He lay down on top of the blanket, then gently pulled her and the blanket into his arms.
"I'm sorry," he said, full of guilt. "I hurt you."
She nestled against him, breathing in the clean scent of his body wash. Somehow, it made her feel safe.
She was too exhausted to talk. She just shook her head.
Damian pressed his cheek against hers. Still worried, he asked, "Are you upset?"
She shook her head again. Afraid he might think she was angry, she burrowed a little deeper into his chest.
The moment he felt her move closer, he smiled, relieved.
He held her, kissing her forehead and murmuring softly, "Get some sleep. We'll head back when you wake up."
Scarlett finally spoke, "Okay."
Damian twirled a strand of her hair between his fingers and smiled, "Don't worry. No matter what happens, I'm here. If your brother asks, just blame me. I'll handle it. Everything's going to be fine."
Scarlett listened, and a small smile touched her lips. "Okay."
Then she closed her eyes.
After everything they'd done, she had nothing left. Even moving felt like too much.
Soon, she was asleep in his arms.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw nothing but darkness. Not a single trace of light.
She shifted slightly and realized someone was right there beside her.
"Damian?" Her voice came out rough and quiet in the dark.
The answer came fast. "Right here."
At the same time, a hand reached for her in the darkness.
Scarlett grabbed it quickly, her voice trembling. "Can you turn on the light?"
Damian reached over and flipped the switch.
When the light flooded the room, he saw the panic and confusion on her face.
He wrapped an arm around her, worried. "Bad dream?"
She looked into his eyes and saw the sincerity there. And also, the fact that she was completely naked.
The moment she realized she wasn't wearing anything, she grabbed the blanket and covered herself.
Damian didn't tease her. He got out of bed like a gentleman. "Get dressed. I'll wait for you downstairs."
Then he fled the bedroom like he was running for his life.
If he didn't leave, he knew he wouldn't be able to stop himself from taking her all over again.
But it was already too late. He couldn't be selfish enough to keep her here any longer.
He practically forced himself to go downstairs. When he got there, he splashed cold water on his face. Only then did he start to feel slightly normal again.
Back in the bedroom, Scarlett sat on the big bed and looked around. Her clothes and Damian's were still scattered on the floor.
She thought about picking up last night's dirty clothes and putting them back on. But when she picked up her dress, she saw it was torn. Her stockings were ruined too.
If she went home looking like that, she might as well hang up a sign telling Nathan she'd slept with Damian.
Just as she was spiraling, there was a knock at the door. Then Damian's voice came through. "Scarlett, I left new clothes for you on the chair by the bed. Don't wear the old ones from last night."
Afraid Damian might walk in, she gripped the corner of the blanket and stared at the door. "Okay, I heard you. Wait for me downstairs."
